I have two. One I made myself using prusik and fisherman knots, the other is manufactured.
They take some adjusting to get just right, but they are the most subtle rigs I've encountered for lighter-weight items.
One has a SOG Pentagon, the other a Pentagon Elite II folder in a custom-made kydex rig. They hold very well, though I admit they dig into the armpit a little. Another problem is because they are not anchored to a belt, they can swing forward when you lean over. I'll take it over a neck-rig any day though. The knife is where you need it, when you need it.
Mercop is a great guy, and it's a great system. Best for a fairly lightweight knife. I find it very comfortable. I think a "double" rig would actually hang better, with a knife on one side, and a spare pistol mag or two on the other side.
Highly recommended as a major improvement over the neck knife.
Double-post, so I thought I'd add something: the Mercharness really conceals very well, but the trick is taking the time to get it adjusted just right.
It's also totally reversible, so once you have it set up and adjusted, it can be worn under either arm, with the knife facing back or forwards, in each case, so there are four ways to wear it.
Not to mention the inventor is a handsome devil The biggest problem I see is with people using the two top holes on the sheath to mount the harness too. Use the top one that faces forward one of the back ones on the side. This way the knife will not pendulum and stays in place. If you spend lots of time behind the wheel I suggest the knife be situated between the armpit and the nipple.- George
Here are a few straight from MCS, till GM gets back in town .....
While the MCS site recommends several knives that excel w/ this system my personal Fav's are the Strider WP line.
Thank you. I'll check them out. Does anyone have any recomendations about which one to get for a Kel-tec P3AT second gen? I see in Mercop's photo of the grandfather oak, the Kel-tec is secured by the clip. Will the grandfather oak hold a pistol securely on it's own?
I can't say for sure since I don't own one but the Grandfather Oak looks like it would be fine. Any properly molded kydex holster will require a deliberate pull to draw the pistol.
I'm going to buy the RCS soon but I think either of the others would work fine.
If I were you, I'd PM mercop and ask for a recommendation. He's a great guy and he really knows his stuff.
Stop you guys, you are making me blush. Especially you Matt. BTW you took a hell of a beating this weekend during force on force but hung in there and learned a lot and keep getting better and better. Nice job bringing the knife to a gun fight
