Metal Doors, Cover, and Concealment

Fella's;

It should be recognized that there are metal doors, and then there are metal doors.

The type that's tested in the boxotruth link is called a Thermatrue, and I have no argument with the results posted. However, there are other metal doors. I don't know how they'd stand up to a similar range test, but I suspect that they'd fare better. How much better is an open question that can only be answered by testing.

How do I know? I'm a locksmith, we regularly install deadbolts in doors. That involves using a holesaw & drilling the door. We don't charge extra for drilling a thermatrue, but we do charge extra for having to drill a steel door. They have significantly thicker metal cladding. Considering that there's gonna be two layers for the bullets to encounter, I wouldn't be surprised that such a door might provide cover for lighter caliber rounds.

True, it's rare to encounter that type of steel door in a household install, but it's not unknown either.

commercial steel doors with steel frames are great. an order of magnitude better than stadard house doors, for break in resistance. I am aways amazed going to high end job sites and seeing the security totally dependant on alarms, lights, and the nessesity of police response, with little or no thought given to actually "hardening" the house exterior itself, with better doors, window films, etc.
