Metal framed .40 or Px4 storm .40?

I have a CZ 75b in 9mm and a 1911 (45 of course). I'd like a 40 S&W to round out my collection. I generally like metal framed guns but keep coming up sort of empty in my search for a metal framed 40. I would get the 75b in 40 but don't want two handguns that are the same other than caliber.

My alternate idea is a Px4 storm (which is polymer framed and for some reason I can't get myself genuinely excited about).

Any metal framed suggestions that I could look into before settling on the Px4?

I'm in California so I have the problem of needing it to be on the CA DOJ roster. And I don't want to pay $1000 for a Sig or HK. I could get off-roster stuff with extra money and a few months wait, but that's not my first choice.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Beretta 96, Used Smith and Wesson 3rd Gen, Stoeger Cougar, which is like a metal framed Px4

Oh..and how could I forget the SIG P229

The only .40 I've ever owned is a Px4 storm. I'd be really curious how a metal frame .40 would handle. The Px4 is fairly accurate but I wish it had a little more heft to soak up the .40 snap.

I think if you look around, with a little luck you might find a Sig P229 for around or even under $800.

Stoeger Cougar is a good one at around $400 or so. I don't know if it's on the CADOJ list, I know the Beretta version is and it's the same gun...

For a poly pistol you might get more excited about, there's the Sig SP2022. About $400.

Sigs can be had for a good bit less than $1,000....you can even find them for $500

A P226 or P229 will be one of the softest shooting .40's that you will ever shoot.

Heard the Beretta 96's had the barrels bored for .40 but otherwise were't modified for the higher pressure round. Thus they had mechanical failures after moderate use. Was this ever corrected? If so (or if it was a false roumor) I would consider that.

I like Sigs but my spending limit is about $700. The polymer framed Sig is in that range but I've essentially determined that I'd like a metal frame.

I'll try the cougar, that looks like a possibility.

Gpurp, have you tried a steel guide rod on your px4? It adds a little weight at the muzzle, which supposedly helps make the recoil less snappy.

I went through about every .40 S&W pistol out there although I never got the chance to shoot the Storm. I like the idea of the rotating barrel lock-up system but like I said, no experience. I will tell you this, the most accurate .40 S&W pistol I ever fired was the CZ-75B. The weight of the pistol also helps with the snappy .40 recoil. ;)

It really is not hard to find a gently used Sig for that price.....I sure would compared to the other guns that you are looking at.

Heck, here is one that is brand new... for $689

Good idea I'll have to give that a try.

CZ57, I can't argue that the CZ75b platform is (in my hands) far and away the best shooter in 9mm I've ever handled. But do I need one in 9mm and 40?

Well, I can sure see the logic in it. Forty bullets cost more so if cost becomes an issue, you can practice more with the 9mm as a training platform for the .40 S&W. If I were in your shoes, that's what I would do. I love SIG/Sauer pistols, but in .40 S&W they are not as accurate as the CZ-75B. ;)

I agree with the others about the P229 as being a top choice pistol. I have tried quite a few pistols in .40 and the P229 is easily my favorite. The P229 was designed for the .40. They are available for $700 as mentioned NEW from Top Gun Supply and used from places like Sumiit Gun Broker for closer to $525.

In my hands the P229 in .40 is more accurate than I can shoot my Son's CZ 75 SP01. ;) They are also mechanically extremely accurate as a typical classic P series SIG is.

The P229 is the pistol of choice for the Secret Service.

Go with the CZ - I have a PX4 Storm and while it is completely reliable, it is completely inaccurate. Mine came bored oversize, and is only accurate with cast lead oversized at .404. It is more sensitive to trigger manipulation than any other sidearm I have ever fired, bar none. Interestingly enough, the trigger seems to be deliberately long, with half of the single action stoke slowly lifting up the firing pin block, which pops out the top of the slide. Customer service at Beretta is extremely sub-par as well, and because of my experience with this PX4 Storm and interaction with the company on more than one occasion I will never buy another Beretta product.
There is more than one CZ pistol in 40SW, as well, as the P-06 is the compact alloy frame, the P-07 polymer frame, the standard CZ 75B and the Single Action variant, as well as the full size CZ SP-01 Tactical decocker. The new P-09 will also be available in 40SW...not QUITE sure when.

No I haven't but I owned a P-01 for several years and loved it. It was a little tack-driver and I think it compares very well with the SIG/Sauer P228. I only let it go because my brother got his CC permit and was carrying an inferior sidearm. He now has the P-01. I wouldn't hesitate to own the P-06 if I was still shooting .40 S&W but nowadays I just go with the .45 ACP over the .40 S&W. ;)

Witness steel full size (15+1) or compact (12+1); Davidson's says available at 90210, so apparently California legal. Shares the controls of your CZ for an MSRP of $545.

The Cougar (Stoeger or Beretta) is a good idea if you like the PX4. The Cougar uses the same "rotating barrel" lockup as the PX4.

I had the Cougar in .40 once and greatly regretted selling it. It was well built, very clean looking and of course it shot very lightly and accurately. I bought min $369 brand new about 1 1/2 years ago.
