Anyone know where I can find a good metal side-folding stock for my WASR? I've been looking around but everyone seems to be out.

riflestocks.com?

Ace makes a couple different styles, one that requires modification of the rear trunnion and has the folding mechanism mount flush with the back of the receiver, or a 'bolt-on' version that screws into the factory trunnion and requires no modification. You can get a solid Galil/FN-style, Socom 'lightweight' style, or collapsible M4-style stocks for the folder mechanism.

I bought one from Cope's Distributing last summer, but it doesn't look like they have that kind in stock. They do have AMD-65 side folders, and a bunch of Tapco folding stocks.

Are you including wire folders?

On option mentioned above is an ace with an internal block and a folding mechanism

I'm not a fan of wire folders as they preclude cheek welds. I have seen some modified to address that but never handled one so I can't comment on those.

The ace external blocks are IMHO ugly and very funny looking. From a function standpoint the add to much length for the way I shoot my AKs.

The internal block with an ace mechanism and stock of you choice is not a bad route and relatively easy work.

You can get them from CSS, they are a great company I have ordered from a number of times and always been happy. They are renowned for their very fast shipping.

You can mount up one of the ACE, DHP or Tromix stocks.

Or if you prefer an AR style stock

I like the ACE side folder, but I don't like the external block and cutting off the tang for an internal block worries me. I was hoping for a military-style folder, namely either a steel triangle or 100-series model, but I can't seem to find either one. Anyone know where I can find one of those?

Why does cutting the tang worry you? And why does it worry you more than replacing the whole trunnion?

You could use this but it has the same issues for me as an external block.

These are not cheap, and require more work to install than cutting a tang but they are pretty cool

I know nothing about this company but google found this

Again this requires replacing the trunnion.

Thanks, Girodin... that last link was exactly what I was looking for. BTW cutting off the tang worries me because if I decide to replace the stock again it really narrows down my options.

Are you ware that the last stock I linked to require that you replace the whole trunnion which also limits what stocks you could put back on? In fact to change back you would need to replace the trunnion again (of course you would have one without a chopped tang but sourcing a rear trunnion would be relatively minor in terms of expense and effort compared to installing the triangle folder).

I'm not trying to dissuade you just make sure you understand what is involved for each. Best of luck. The triangle folders and polymer side folders are very cool (and expensive) stocks.

Yeah, I realize if want a quality folder removing the tang and replacing the trunnion is pretty much unavoidable, so I've pretty much made peace with that. Thanks for letting me know what all this involved before I started tearing my rifle apart.

To take it a step further, if you get the AKS-74 or -10x style side folder, not only is the rear trunnion different, but the receiver is cut out to accommodate it. You won't be changing back.

Second, if you want the folder to stay closed, you'll need to install the catch hook, pin, and spring at the front trunnion which requires more cutting of the receiver and some drilling. Otherwise, the folder release button holds the stock out from closed quite a bit. That button is under compression when you snap the -74 stock into the closed position, which keeps it all nicely tensioned so it doesn't rattle against the receiver. Without the hook, it will not stay closed at all and will flop around in an unpleasant manner.

It isn't a simple job, at all.

The odd extension block solves those two problems. But I wouldn't want one either.

I was planning on taking the gun to a 'smith to have the stock installed anyway, but I wanted some barrel mods too so gunsmith fees are rapidly stacking up. Now I'm kind of leaning toward the ACE skeleton folder because it's cheaper and I can install it myself.

The only folding stocks that are worth anything (in my opinion) is the AK-100 type side folder. Unfortunately, these aren't easy to retrofit.

Every other folding stock I've ever seen for the AK has some kind of fatal flaw, and most more than one: wobbly, no cheek weld, or weak.

If you really, really, have to have a folder, sell the WASR and get a Saiga conversion with the AK-100 side folder.

Brian,

I agree, but would add the Chinese Type 56 folder (like in Averageman's photo) as a worthwhile one. They're pretty rare these days, but they are my favorite. Better than the AK100, IMO, because they don't require a separate lock-open mechanism. They also give a better cheek weld than the AK100 (IMO).
