MEXICO CITY - Mexico will suspend its plan to distribute maps to migrants wanting to cross the U.S. border illegally, but an official said Thursday the decision was not made because of American pressure.

Miguel Angel Paredes, spokesman for the federal Human Rights Commission, said the government wanted to "rethink" its plan because human rights officials in border states expressed concern that the maps would show anti-immigrant groups — like the Minutemen civilian patrols — where migrants likely would gather.

"This would be practically like telling the Minutemen where the migrants are going to be," Paredes said. "We are going to rethink this, so that we wouldn't almost be handing them over to groups that attack migrants."

On Wednesday, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said the United States opposed the plan "in the strongest terms." He said the effort would lead more people to cross the border, "leading to more migrant deaths and the further enrichment of the criminal human trafficking rings."

Paredes was asked if the Mexican decision was a response to U.S. pressure.

"No, we are not responding to that," he said. "We have not taken that into account."

The commission, a Mexican government-funded agency with independent powers, originally said it would print and pay for at least 70,000 maps showing highways, rescue beacons and water tanks in the Arizona desert.

The posters were to have been distributed in border towns and through human rights offices in Mexico starting in March, when illegal border crossings are usually high.

The commission denied the maps would encourage illegal immigration, saying instead they would help guide those in trouble.

Now, the group will "seek other ways" to help migrants, Paredes said.

The map dispute follows a string of other diplomatic rows involving the U.S.-Mexico border.

U.S. border states say they are fed up with illegal migration and drug trafficking and are pressuring the U.S. government to boost protection, including by extending a wall along the common frontier, something Mexico bitterly resents.

Mexico is angry about U.S. civilian groups that have organized patrols along the border and has accused them of attacking migrants.

However, there is little evidence of that and the groups seldom — if ever — target water tanks or rescue beacons.

One of the most well-known groups, the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, placed a link to the maps on its Web site but did not advocate using them to find illegal migrants.

The posters were designed by the Tucson, Ariz.-based rights group Humane Borders, which operates several desert water stations. The group previously distributed about 100 posters in the Mexican border town of Sasabe.

Some of the posters have warnings, such as: "Don't go. There isn't enough water."

However, officials conceded many migrants were unlikely to heed the advice.

be handing them over to groups that attack migrants

Since when does the Minutemen attack migrants?

If I had that map I would go out on the weekends with binoculars and cell phone in hand to call in the Border Patrol.

Migrants to the Mexican goverment, Illegal immigrants to us Americans.

Not illegal immigrants, either. Invading aliens. We are at war, and unidentified persons crossing the border without our permission, not in a recognized uniform of an enemy armed service, could be held for possible espionage or sabotuer charges.
Invade Mexico - it's the only way.

I agree, lets invade northern Mexico, crack down on crime, drugs, and corruption, then when the mexicans immigrate, they'll just be comming to New New Mexico.:neener:

Several things.....

1. the map gives away some of the routes that were not being observed.

2. the US figured the map as a red herring with the mesicans hoping that by advertising routes, the US would concentrate on the map routes. Instead, the US would look to see where else the crossings are taking place.

3. Washington told the mesicans that something drastic was about to happen to them.......chris3

Yes, like amnesty/guest worker programs getting closer to passing, which would make illegal border crossings unnecessary.

Why just think of all the jobs created when the buses can run impeded 24/7 over the border, job created to process "martricula consular" cards, jobs created to integrate these low-income workers into the public assistance program. All these potential jobs! Good for America! :neener:

Lots of complaining about the States being overwhelmed with school and healthcare costs from Big Corporations + illegals not paying their fair share. Apparently, a guest-worker program would change "migrants" from having to seek low-paying produce-picking and landscaping and restaurant work into the high-paying jobs they are overwhelmingly qualified for, such as CEOs and scientists and engineers and financial wizards. Americans don't want those jobs anyway. :scrutiny:

Everytime I go to the middle of nowhere, everything metallic or plastic is already shot up by folks who don't value their brass or expended shotshells. So how is it that there are any functioning water tanks installed by illegal immigration co-conspirators anywhere in the desert Southwest?

How do illegals not pay their fair share?

If they work from a legitimate employer, taxes are taken out, whether or not they have a legit SSN.
If they make a purchase in a store, they pay sales tax.
If they purchase a home or other real property, they pay property tax.
If they purchase gasoline, they pay a gasoline tax.

There is an issue work related taxes, however. Even if taxes are taken out, they cannot claim any of the prescribed benefits. If the taxes are not taken out, it is usually because the employer pays in cas, thereby saving the employer additional business expenses and reported income.

Me, I pay property taxes, which include funds to the school district. But I don't have kids. The family down the street have seven kids. Their not paying 7x the school tax. So who in America is really paying their fair share?

Actually, a lot of employers dont document that the workers even exist and they pay in cash. You save a ton of money this way. Why do you think people have been robbing illegals? Because they have enormous quantities of work cash on them. There arent any onsite inspections to see how many workers someone really has because this would turn up way too many illegals on the "legitimate" sites that are only employing fraudulently docmented illegals and paying taxes.

Thats the problem. When the govt is benefitting from one class of illegal activity but being harmed by a slightly different class of illegal activity, it cant distinguish between them without revealing its own corruption. Similar to the "nukes/al queda/guns smuggled in bales of marijuana" parable. The only way you can catch the bales of marijuana that are carrying more serious contraband inside them is to admit you know about the marijuana and are letting it through.

And thus we see how the war on drugs and the blind eye turned towards illegal immigration has severely damaged our government's ability to govern. Good work guys.

That's a long list of ifs, friend.

Unfortunately, most don't work for legitimate employers, but participate in an undergound economy that's not taxed. They do, indeed, pay sales taxes. Most don't buy property, but rent, which means they contribute to property taxes. They do, indeed, pay gasoline taxes.

So much for the plus side. Your list of ifs doesn't account for all the illegal aliens in jails and prisons. It doesn't account for food stamps. It doesn't account for free education for illegal alien kids. It doesn't account for welfare. It doesn't account for housing assistance. It doesn't account for social workers' salaries. It doesn't account for all the damage wrought by illegal alien drivers without insurance, driving skills, or road-worthy cars. It doesn't account for the medical costs absorbed by hospitals and passed on to people and insurance companies who actually pay their medical bills.

Your list of ifs doesn't account for the delays suffered by legitimate immigrants—one of America's greatest strengths—who often wait years and years even to be considered for admission. It doesn't account for more than a very small fraction of the damage done to our nation by illegal aliens.

Smudging the legal line between legitimate immigrants and illegal aliens is a leftist extremist tactic whose purpose is to muddy the waters of discussion and divide Americans into hostile camps. I hope you won't do their dirty work for them.
