This was a somewhat impulsive buy. I really didn't need another AR but the concept seemed cool so I figured I'd give it a shot. There wasn't much information out there on this except for what the company put out so I wanted to do a little write up on it. I am by no means a professional writer or gun snob but I have a ton of experience with the M4 in the Army. I haven't fired this yet, so this is an overview of what I think right now. I should be able to update with a range report later this week.

The rifle as a whole is well put together. All the parts appear to be within spec and there is minimal movement between the upper and lower, comparable to my PSA rifle and less than a number of service rifles I've carried. All my other uppers slide into place on the MGI lower and vice versa, no fitment issues.

The barrel swap feature is simple and locks it firmly in place. Both the included 5.56mm barrel and my 6.8mm slide into position and function properly. Rounds in both calibers chamber and eject smoothly. To remove the barrel you lock the bolt to the rear, unlock and slide the cover piece forward, flip the levers out and slide the barrel assembly out of the receiver. Installation is the reverse, with a bolt change if required.

The swappable magazine well is dovetailed into the lower receiver and held in place by the magazine release and trigger guard. When the upper is attached there is zero play in it. To remove it you release the trigger guard, press the mag release and slide the magwell off the receiver. They make replacements that utilize glock, AK and a couple other magazines, including a .308 upper that fits the standard AR15 lower.

The rail is a carbine length, aluminum free float.

Had it in 2008-2009, I ended up dumping it because of the wait times to get parts to caliber convert.

The whole premise is the easy of converting to different calibers/magazines. Doesn't help your product, when you have to wait 8+ months for a different magazine well.

Overall quality is excellent and would recommend them, only if their wait times was not so long.

Not sure if their production times have increased, since pre-2010, to address this issue.

While the barrel/caliber swap idea is nice, POA/POI shifts tend to make it impractical unless you have a very repeatable (expensive) scope and a table of zeros. I find swapping uppers with more modest optics dedicated to them works better for me, YMMV, but I expect to eventually end up with a lower for every upper.

I am intrigued by the interchangeable mag well idea, particularly for the AK mag option as I love my AR in 7.62x39 but mags are an issue. If RRA gets their AR with the AK mags in full production I suspect I'll lose all interest in the MGI Hydra.

Yeah, I'm interested in seeing how different the POI is when swapping barrels, and how much it will change when just removing and putting the same one right back in.

Got the chance to shoot this afternoon. I had zero malfunctions while firing about 120 5.56 and 15 6.8 hand loads. I zeroed the ironsights with 5.56, pulled the barrel, reinstalled and POI was still the same. Swapped over to 6.8 and realized I don't have a front sight on that barrel and hadn't brought a scope to slap on so I just fired those rounds to check functionality. I switched back to the 5.56 barrel and my zero was still good. Overall I'm pretty happy right now.

Glad to see it is working out for you. Good luck with the rifle. Sounds like you got it already
