CMU faculty expert to talk about how firearms damage hearing
Midland Daily News 02/03/2006

MOUNT PLEASANT -- A Central Michigan University faculty expert will discuss "Hearing and Firearms: Noise Exposure" in a monthly "Bringing Life to Scholarship" symposium series sponsored by The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions.

CMU communication disorders faculty member Michael Stewart will present his observations and perspectives at noon Feb. 10 in Room 1255 of CMU's Health Professions Building. Stewart said attendees need not be firearm users to appreciate the lecture, which he recommends for anyone who wants to know how dangerous firearm noise exposure can be to human hearing and what can be done to protect oneself.

"This could include shooters themselves, family members, hearing conservationists or health professionals who work with individuals with hearing loss," he said.

"Participants will learn about how we hear, how noise damages the delicate inner ear structures, high-risk noise exposures and how we can protect ourselves from excessively high levels of firearm noise using various types of ear protection," Stewart said. "Electron microscopic pictures of actual damage to inner ear structures also will be shown."

Admission is free and open to the public. Attendees are welcome to bring their lunches. Dessert and beverages will be provided.

Eh... Did you say something???? ;)
One wonders if they will also do one on the loud radios and Ipods... I hate being on the Metro and some kid sits down next to me and I can hear the music clearly from 4 feet away on a crowded metro:cuss: :cuss: :cuss:

Criminals are at the most risk.....

of hearing loss from guns as the bullet goes in one ear and out the other...........chris3

Sounds like a good reason to exclude suppressors from NFA...

Where have we heard that before...over and over and over.

Oh no, can't do that, poachers ya know, it's all about poachers

Beat me to it. If there's an opportunity for attendee participation in the forum, it's a perfect time to bring up suppressors, the NFA, how they're considered "polite" in Europe etc....

Might get some people thinking.

Crap, this was today. If this had been posted a few days ago, I would have planned to go.

well, shoulda been a short lecture at least.

1. loud noises can damage hearing.

2. You can protect yourself by using ear protection.

Now, where are the refreshment? Are there donuts?

Sounds like a good lecture, I saw a post somewhere in the last week that really got me wondering how seriously some people take hearing protection. It was a thread talking about someone getting their girlfriend to shoot or something and it was suggested that they take her shoot and have her use both muffs and plugs because the noise might scare her, as though it was odd to double up and that masculine men just took it and one or the other was good enough. Ymmv, but I have some hearing damage and you have no idea how annoying it is until you get there. You can't wear enough sound isolation gear imho.

Agree with Standing Wolf and El Tejon.

Okay, I am only a older returning student often being mistaken as being 'faculty' because I am old. I am no expert.

Now how can I get a sweet deal on something like this. My first topic:

Positive Health Benefits of # 8.5 Shot Size On Orange Clays

That fits the criteria - right? Hey I can do this...ya'll would come wouldn't you?
:)

Of Course!

:D
Why I have enough folks on THR alone than can attest to the positve health benefits of 28 ga, # 8.5 size shot, shotgunning...

Hot Dang ! I might be onto something here. Put me in coach - I 'dun' took Speech, gotta A too! I made A++ in "Suthern ".

Even the folks not into shooting that much "learnt" something and agreed on the Therapeutic Benefits of Reloading shotshells. That was the day some folks gathered around the tailgate of the pickup truck and watched me reload 28 ga shells.

Couple of kids kept "stealing" shells, running out to the field where Grandpa was, shooting them, bringing 'em back and with grins "do mine again please". :p

Folks too busy laughing, watching, learning, dogs running over that-away, kids behavin' with guns, hot dogs, lemonade, Grandkids accepting guns from Grandparents...

Everyone felt healthy, no aches, pains or stress...

Makes a lot more sense than "Study Money" going for "Why do folks feel bad when they shut a car door on their thumb" . Any idiot knows it is because it hurts like hell. :p

Just because a Campus Building has "Education" on it - does not mean one is always going to learn something useful.

Heck, my College is using a Conference Room to introduce some canidates, so far these folks have proven they cannot work a water fountain, and get lost getting to and from the bathroom. And they want folks to actually vote for them?
:uhoh: :p
