Law-abiding residents should be able to protect themselves.

Since the Michigan Legislature is currently considering legislation affecting self-defense measures, Dick DeVos issued the following statement regarding the package of legislation known as the “Home is Your Castle” doctrine:

“There have been and will continue to be many debates surrounding the rights given to us in the Second Amendment. Let me be clear: I support the rights granted to us by our Founding Fathers to keep and bear arms, and that is why I support the legislation known as the ‘Home is Your Castle’ doctrine.

“Protecting loved ones from danger is a natural response and people shouldn’t be punished for protecting their family. Every person should have the right to defend oneself and their family in the case of a forceful and unlawful break-in, without the fear of being sued for civil damages.”

Like most folks, we don't always choose our words carefully.

Standing Wolf hit the nail on the head, but DeVos comes from a very conservative background. I wouldn't put too much credence on a slip of the tongue.

I did some work for his dad Rich and his partner Jay VanAndel back in 1961-62 when Amway was getting started in an old gas station in Ada, Mi. It's now 45 years later and I've seen what they have accomplished in my backyard.

We haven't had a candidate for governor as worthwhile as Dick DeVos in a long time. If he gets elected governor in 2006, look for him as president in 2012. Present Gov. Granholm is a Detroit Democrat political hack. Dick DeVos is a true conservative Republican and a credit to the party of Teddy Roosevelt.

The problem with Repubs is not that we don't have conservative Repubs, we do. We just don't have conservative republican leaders. DeVos has the mettle to be just that.

Doesn't MI already have a castle doctrine law? I think even my thoroughly blue state does. The "hot" button these days is "stand your ground" laws ... which, I admit, are all too frequently referred to (even here) as "castle doctrine" laws, which they are not.

No, you're right..it is a stand your ground bill, but everyone here refers to it as Castle Doctrine and as long as they pass the thing, I don't much care.

To be honest, I was skeptical about him. Scamway billionaire who decided he wants to be Governor. Yay. He invited me and a couple of our PAC people to have lunch with him and talk guns, and I went kind of half-heartedly because I hate shmoozing and usually the guys don't let me out in public because I tend to be a bit..well, me. but I figured what the hell. As it turns out, I liked the guy. A lot. I was impressed as hell by him..and that's saying something.
