(MI) Man found guilty in killing of rattlesnake

My personal rules for dealing with snakes.
Non venomous snakes, leave them alone, let them go their merry way no matter where I find them.
Venomous varieties I encounter in open country where they can do no harm; leave them alone.
Venomous reptiles in public areas where an encounter with a human is likely; it's toast. Dead meat. Tastes like chicken.

At one point, the doomsday clock was set to less than one minute to midnight; and man was never placed on the endangered species list.

Great for pickeral snakes!!

I'm a regular @ pickeral lake and a supporter of 'friends of pickeral lake' who've fought the dnr to keep pickeral in it's natural state virtually undeveloped. In the many years we've spent our lazy summer days @ pickeral it is rare to see one of these snakes approach the path, but when they do i use the chance to educate my children why they should leave nature alone.. The snakes have crossed the beach at busy times and HAVE NEVER struck out at anyone and always seemed more interested in getting away from the beach goers, i don't buy this mans story for a second, not to mention think of what he taught his children as well as the other children on the beach..that you can pick up these snakes and not be harmed..what a foolish thoughtless move.. And for an update...this man was convicted a second time for killing another one...

lolablu, do you have a source for this claim?

Yeah, I realize this is an eight year old post brought back to life.

lolablu, thanks for joining THR for the express purpose of reviving an eight year old thread from the dead. I assume you have no interest in shooting or firearms, just wanted to "poke a stick" at this old story.

Galloway should have asked Herpetologist Glenn Fox to grab a stick, while Galloway got another annoyed snake and put it near Glenn Fox.

Is a wooden toothpick a short stick? I will furnish the "stick". Just think some folks think us Rednecks are backward. I carry a Single Six with CCI shotshells for any snakes and my regular carry. Single Six in a fender bag on the ATV, easy to reach. I did kill a "flying copperhead" once. The guy ahead of me got bogged down in a mud pit and tried to spin out and threw two snakes in the air, got one on the "wing" and should have had it mounted.

Killing a rattlesnake is illegal?? Making it unlawful for people to protect themselves against dangerous animals is what should be illegal. We had a similar problem when mountain lions started repopulating our state. All knowing urbanites protested loudly when ranchers started protecting their livestock (and themselves.) Bleeding hearts who live in the city seem to know a whole lot more about wildlife than country people do, for some reason.
