I've been searching for news articles every day to see if anything new pops up. This isn't anything really new but a decent read.

FTA:
Which is why, going back to the 1968 assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., there’s been a tendency for this issue to burn hot for a while in the wake of gun-related tragedies, then dissipate on the pro-gun-control side when opponents of new gun restrictions dig in their heels.

“I find it hard to believe that the average person will support personal ownership of automatic weapons,” said local peace activist Ira Harritt, “but the gun lobby has been successful in somehow making people feel it’s just the first step in them taking all of their guns away.”

And there is the problem. THEY are talking about automatic weapons. WE are not because they were banned 27 years ago. Of course there is no sense in supporting a ban on something that isn't what they want to ban because what they want to ban is already banned.

It really is a travesty that they continue to believe that you can walk into walmart and buy a machine gun.
We should campaign to have them change the terms to 'machine gun' (illegal except with a tax stamp on a rare and expensive grandfathered gun) and 'self loading rifle' (legal semiauto).

I think if we referred to them as self loading rifles and got any mention of 'auto' (even if it is only semi auto) out of the description, there would be a lot less of this misunderstanding.

I'm always hesitant to get real wound up about his one because it really is a travesty that the American citizen CAN'T walk into WalMart and buy the same weapon the military uses. That's what the Constitution was amended to protect!

I have a feeling that when we finally get around to fighting the last major battles of the gun control fight, we're going to find ourselves wishing we hadn't invested so much in swallowing and regurgitating the enemy's divide-and-conquer tactic of "oh, but these rifles aren't dangerous MACHINE GUNS!!!." :uhoh:

What's wrong with owning a machine gun?

I too hate the, "but they're not machine guns!" Argument. No, they're not machine guns... but they should be.

I too believe that the Second Amendment covers machine guns, but we're unlikely to win that battle just now.

I am not sure why every media outlet loses the "semi-" in front of "automatic." It has been awhile since I took a journalism class but I am sure when you take two words and connect them with a hyphen, it changes the parameters of both. They must have forgotten that lesson.

If we ever get a real chance to repeal the GCA 68' and the NFA, there will be no antis left.
What I mean to say is, from all the people I'm acquainted with, about 80% consider themselves progun, 55% are against a AWB, and only 3% know what class 3 means and only 1% actually know enough to be pro machine gun. Ive argued with the strongest of opponents against such things as a AWB, and only have met 2 who believe in machine guns being covered by the 2a. Its my belief that the vast majority think full auto can mow people down like a international harvester, because they have gotten all their knowlege on that from hollywood.

Don't get too worked up about what you read that is published by newspapers these days. They are largely irrelevant as shrinking subscriptions and advertising revenues are making them go the way of buggy whips and dress hoops. It's a dying industry without much influence despite their high opinion of themselves.
