My Google-Fu is weak tonight. I've been told, and I'm fairly certain I've read somewhere that impact tools like kubatons, collapsible batons, etc. are illegal to carry for self defense in Michigan, but I can't find the actual statute.

As I was searching for it, I came across a couple old forum posts (not on THR) of kubaton classes being held as recently as 2012 through a certified trainer.

I like the idea of a collapsible baton for a number of reasons, a self defense tool only being one of them.

Can someone clarify, by way of statute in Michigan law, if these are in fact illegal?

I do have some baton training, and was looking at either this one or this one.

Thanks

I did find this.

750.224 Weapons; manufacture, sale, or possession as felony; violation as felony; penalty; exceptions; "muffler" or "silencer" defined.
Sec. 224.

(1) A person shall not manufacture, sell, offer for sale, or possess any of the following:

(a) A machine gun or firearm that shoots or is designed to shoot automatically more than 1 shot without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger.

(b) A muffler or silencer.

(c) A bomb or bombshell.

(d) A blackjack, slingshot, billy, metallic knuckles, sand club, sand bag, or bludgeon.

(e) A device, weapon, cartridge, container, or contrivance designed to render a person temporarily or permanently disabled by the ejection, release, or emission of a gas or other substance.

Great beauty, great animals, great Big Blue Troopers!, but very ambiguous weapons laws.
^^^^ Agreed ^^^^

They are real close to finally changing things so air guns are no longer considered firearms. You know things are kind of strange when the state has to adopt a federal definition to make things clearer! :uhoh:

But a nice solid walking stick or cane is ok.

Because canes and walking sticks are not concealable.

I really wish... well, no, I'd call it an acceptable compromise that if we are permitting concealed carry of weapons, it should include ALL concealable weapons, not just pistols. Sorta like the Kentucky permit to carry a deadly weapon, it covers anything that can be considered a concealable weapon.

We in Michigan need a CPL just to carry a stun gun or taser. Makes no sense.

I have canes and walking sticks, but they don't slip into a back pocket when not in use. A collapsible baton does. Sometimes, I'd rather clunk something rather than shoot or stab or slice it.

did you correct slungshot to slingshot in your quote? The law says and means slungshot. It's a different thing.

Another problem may be local ordnances and laws. We have firearm preemption, but knife laws are all over the place. I'm going to assume other weapons are the same, differing from city/county to the next.
