I can't legaly get one, so this is really a matter of curiosity. What, if anything makes Microtech knives worth the painfully high cost?

precision
quality
design
materials
innovation

MTs have been a leader in innovative design of automatic knives since Tony first started with the little mini-seal. MT uses the best materials they can find. They hold to rediculous levels of precision in manufacture. Their designs are elegant.

They are also frustratating to collect because you never know what or how many of a design will be made.

MT makes some of the best production knives on the market. Well made, well designed, very functional. Their OTF knives are VERY cool...both the single action and double action. I tried to be a collector, but ended up broke...so I figured I'd become a user instead. MT knives won't let you down.

Their recent QC is a bit suspect, and I'm not a fan of the new tri-pin screws they are using, but they're still pretty awesome knives.

I have a Paragon - which was a $100 - $150 knockoff of MT - & it's great. Florida CCW covers auto-knives, except the ones that shoot the blade out separately.... for some reason those are prohibited. Is that a federal thing?

bubbyG,

You're referring to a "ballistic knife" and they are prohibited by fed law and most state laws. FL is one of the states that bans them.

Which Paragon? You do know they are out of business now and that if it's in good condition you might want to baby it.

1911JMB, what state do you live in?

Unfortunatly, I live in Michigan.

By the way, somebody please give me a further definition as to what a ballistic knife is.

I normally buy Benchmade but have bought the Mini Socam auto and just ordered the Mini UMS auto. They are well built knives.

Thats kind of neat, I can't figure out why they would be illegal. Seems no worse than a handgun, or crossbow if the issue is noise.

I was talking about these knives with a cousin of mine who saw them on 24. He lives in ohio, and legaly owns a Godfather. He is interested in getting a MT, but he and I were looking at the MT webpage and it looks like if you're not in the police or military category, you would not be able to get a MT knife repaired. Are they built well enough to where this shouldn't be a problem?

Microtechs are very slick knives. In "24" there was a Microtech Halo shown in the first season when Jack replaces a badguy's limo driver and the bady guy pulls the knife out of the hidden arm rest. You would think the bad guy would have hidden something more potent in his limo... a Halo is a spendy car knife too.

Are they worth the money? Yeah. Yeah, they are. So are BMW's. Sure you are paying for the name - to a point. But you are also paying for a high degree of engineering and development.
