Looking for a new 1911. I simply don't have one. Purpose will be casual range work..not likely carry. Looking at Remington R1 Enhanced for $740 or Ruger NightWatchman $760. Thoughts about these two? Other suggestions in the price-range?

.45 ACP please.

Clarification....this isn't a WTB thread. Looking at my options for retail purpose.

I had a 1991 purchased in 1996. Loved it! Quality still good? That may be a great option.

Lots of choices out there for a decent mid-range 1911:

Colt 01991-$699
Colt 01980XSE-$867
SA PX9109LP Loaded-$706
SA PI9128LP Range Officer-$743
Remington R1-$679
Ruger Model 6700 SR1911-$639
S&W SW1911 E Series-$760

I recently sold my Remington R1 at $75 less than I paid for it, took that money, and applied it to a new Colt 1991.

The Remington was nice - my first 1911.

The Colt is ... the real deal. Had I known what I know now, a new Colt 1991 for under $800 out the door would have been my first 1911. No question about it; that would be my advice to any friend who asked me about buying his or her first 1911.

Start with the Colt and it is unlikely that you will be disappointed. The Kimber, Ruger, Dan Wesson, Springfield, Rock Island, Tisas, Smith & Wesson, Sig Sauer, et al., can come later. Start off with the real deal.

My 2 cents worth, since you asked.

I have 2 S&W and 2 Rugers and love them both. Had a Colt ages ago and the housing that holds the spring and detents for the slide stop and thumb safety flew off in less than a hundred rounds and took quite a bit for Colt to repair.

Those are all low end guns, not mid range.

Mid range is something like a Springfield TRP or Dan Wesson Valor.

I'm new to the 1911 myself, so I can't offer an expert opinion. I did my research on the 1911 for almost a year and found that there are a lot of different guns out there that have their own fans. I eventually handled a lot of guns at the lgs and ended up with a Desert Eagle, because I came to the conclusion that it was the best buy for the money and it fit with my expected use.

Low EnD is ATI/RIA/Taurus.

No. That's entry level. What you're asking about is low end.

Trust me, mid range is $1200 - $1800. High end is $2000 - $5000 and up.

The OP asked for a gun in the $700 range...doesn't matter what anyone thinks is high end or low end.

OP, the list that bannockburn provided is a great start.

I was clarifying, since it was the title of the thread. There's quite a bit of misconception out there. I'm not telling you what I think. I'm telling you the facts of the 1911 quality and price range.

I give some great suggestions in my guide linked above of 1911s in the $700 range. Yes, you can get a good model at that price.

As others have mentioned, you are indeed in the low end of the 1911 world.

I own two semi autos in .45ACP. Neither is a 1911. I've shot the 1911 and historically they are great and generally accurate. On the other hand there are some great .45ACP pistols in that price range. Is the OP tied to the model or would a G21 or an HK fit his casual range use scenario? I like the caliber but never warmed to a 1911.

Colt
Remington
Ruger

Colts today are as good as they have ever built, according to the experts. Bought 3 this year so far
