lots of good nominations here
but all ye need really say is "K" :)

PS
and try not to "go that route", if you really don't have to, as was so discreetly said up thread by the prudent gentleman

I'm on a similar search and I think I'm zeroing in on the GP-100. It's gonna be a field gun for me and in that capacity, I think its a great gun.

These are N frames and about the same size as a Python.

The L frame S&W is almost identical in size to the Colt Python. Both smaller than an N frame S&W.

IMO, K and L frame S&W's, Colt I/E/J frames, and Ruger "Six" series, as well as GP 100's all fall into the "Mid size" category.

The Ruger Redhawk, S&W N frame, and Colt New Service & MM frame(Anaconda) are the Large frame guns.

Going by what the O.P. has listed, and Colt Diamondback would be nice, even though it's on Colts small D frame (same as Detective Special)

It's smaller than the O.P.'s Python (next size down), can be had with a 4" barrel, and has adjustable sights.

The 4" GP100 seems to me to be the optimum in balance and length. Stout enough to easily handle full house loads with good accuracy, it's a pleasure to shoot and hold. I replaced the new Hogue grips with the older rosewood with the rubber insert, and doubt I'll put the Hogue back on.

I am fairly new to this venue and am looking for information on a 38 S&W Special CTG (B369298). I do believe it was a military and police model, but that's all the information I have. If anyone could help me with manufacturing date, model and value I would greatly appreciate it.

Rookie - post your question to the date of birth stickie thread, instead of burying it in this one, and you'll have better responses.

Pictures are posted by linking the url information from the hosting website. THR does not host pictures, so you can't just upload them from your computer. Instead, you have to have a server hosting your pictures. There are plenty of free sites that do that - I use photobucket. Once you have your pictures on a server, then you can use the system's img posting feature to post your picture. Just click on the tiny picture button above the message entering window, enter your url, name it, and your picture should show up.

I add my 2 cents to the Mdl 10.....it's light (especially the older versions), .38 Spl is undeniably a most useful caliber, you can buy one for a reasonable price, and if you want to sell it, there's always a good market.

Mine is a 50+-year old police issue, and still shoots as good as new.

I don't own any 6" guns except a Blackhawk .357 in 6.5". If you aren't averse to single actions, it's a fantastic gun. My 4" guns are a Smith and Wesson M10 and a Taurus M66. Of the guns I have owned and sold or traded, a M19 Smith, a Ruger Security Six, and a Rossi M971. I could recommend ANY of these guns. If you don't have one already, a M10 Smith surplus police gun from one of the importers would be high on my suggestion list. It is a standard, the gun that rode in most police holsters in the first 80 years of the 20th century. My 19 was a good gun, the Security Six was fine, the Taurus is a great shooter, the Rossi...well, it was okay, decent shooter, but not up to the others. I'm quite sure a GP100 would work for you and I know the 686s are great shooters. I'm not into Colts, but they built some good guns. Not like there's a lack of choices to your criteria here. :scrutiny:

JMHO, though.

i like the 4" 66/19.
this round butt 66-4 is the sweetest shooting Smith i have ever had
