I used to buy everything shooting and reloading related from Midway or Brownells. Recently I've been noticing that Cabelas online has better prices. I even have a C&R FFL. I had previously heard that Cabelas was overpriced. My last 2 purchases have been from Cabelas. Have they restructured their pricing or have I just been missing out because of my idiot friends saying they were overpriced? I've noticed lately that Midway is also out of MANY things.

Can you give an example, maybe a couple links, that will compare the prices of an item you viewed?

My experience (shopping) has continued to show that Cabela's is generally more expensive. They have sales, and those prices are great, but those are temporary sale prices.

I just bought a Lee Pro-Auto disk for $35 at Cabelas. It was $37 with my discount at Midway. Also Cabelas price on plated bullets is better. Also the Lyman T-Mag turret press. Almost everything I looked at was equal or cheaper at Cabelas. Don't get me wrong, I love Midway, but Cabelas shipping is cheaper.

I have always found Cabelas over priced as well. I love going in there to put my hands on thing before I order them online. You can find good sales every now and then though.

I buy from both but it generally takes a coupon to get me off the fence. Cabelas' has fewer restrictions and I collect points but their selection for many categories is a bit lacking. One thing I've noticed while shopping at their stores is how much is out of stock in regards to powder and bullets.

MidWay sale flyers seem to offer the same items month after month but I do tend to find their prices better on most comparable items.

I have to pay sales tax on anything that I buy online from Cabelas, and that tends to make them non-competitive with mailorder houses like MidwayUSA.

When buying online I choose Cabelas because we have a local store. They have a ship to store feature so not only do I get it faster, but I do not need to pay shipping. But, the things I order online the most like bullet moulds, Cabelas does not carry.

I have found Gamaliel and Graf and Son's to beat both Midway and Cabela's. Midway and Cabela's are retail businesses. Many of their items are priced right at MSRP - it's how they make a profit - while I can get things from the others shipped for free - that makes the savings for me

Even the Cabelas stores are way over priced. I use to go to the big one in Owatona Minnesota all the time as i was 80 miles away and I never could part with my money there, except for lunch in the cafe. Elk sandwich or bison burger:D. Nice taxidermy stuffs too.

I think the issue is that Midway tends to be a little overpriced too, or at least not the cheapest place around. The only time I buy from them is if I need a large variety of unrelated things that I can't get into one shipment elsewhere, and then I save on the shipping. I only get Cabelas if I'm planning on being on that side of town and need one thing not worth shipping since I have to pay tax and shipping if I order from them, tax and gas if I buy locally.

Here are examples right now:

IMR4895
Powder Valley $19.00
Cabelas $24.99 (but on sale for $22.99)
Midway $22.99

Hornady 150gr FMJBT .308
Powder Valley $19.69
Cabelas $22.99
Midway $20.99

Winchester .30-06 brass x 50
Powder Valley $19.20
Cabelas $23.99
Midway $22.49

Our credit card [not a Cabela's card] gives us reward points and there are literally hundreds of ways we can use them. Airline travel, hotel stays, we can buy junk products directly from the rewards company, get 0.5% cash back, purchase products from retailers we have no interest in, or exchange the reward points for gift cards from a long list of retailers. Looking through all the various options, THE ONLY ONE that stuck out as something we'd like, was to exchange the points for Cabela's gift cards.

So we do that once a year. We use that credit card for EVERYTHING; bills, groceries, gasoline, EVERYTHING. We build up points in a hurry. Also, if you buy from Cabela's, they will send you a "cash card" at the end of every summer. The way this thing works is that you go to a Cabela's store and if you purchase $500 in merchandise, they activate the "cash card" for $150 that you can use right then and there. We've been able to combine our credit card points with this promotion.

This year, we took in $400 in Cabela's gift cards that came from our reward points. We also happen to have a $50 Visa card that we got as a rebate from buying Cooper Tires. So, we spent about $60 out of pocket to get the first basket of merchandise up to that $500 mark, and then the next basket was already arranged right at the $150 mark.

Basically, we walked out of Cabela's with ~$650 worth of goods, and we only spent about $60 of our own money. It's pretty cool I guess. I mainly buy reloading components and stuff, and the wife gets whatever she happens to want. I have to say, $650 worth of Cabela's merchandise won't quite fill up the trunk of the car like you might think it would. Their prices are up above their competitors in my estimation.

If our credit card were to offer some type of exchange for Midway Money, we wouldn't mess with Cabela's.

Cabelas can sometimes be a bargin.
If you can get to the store and not on line anyhow.
They sometimes have great deals at the local bargin Cave. Mny items there are returns from mail orders and it is not very organized.
Boots, pnumatic guns, knives and muzzelloaders were some of the interesting goods there. Also jewlery if you are Christmas shopping.
I have seen some fair prices in theit collectors corner also. Problem is for me is the second trip for the waiting period.
Having items in stock is rather expensive and adds to the overhead and the price too.
I have always seen a large selection of firearms there and sometimes we must figure the expense of all the trips looking into the price. Driving 150 miles to save $20 is just foolish.

midway usa ships the same day. it took cabelas three days to process and ship my order.

to me, i would rather pay 2-3 extra at midway to get my stuff faster.

btw, i have never found cabelas or bass pro to be cheaper when i compare the exact same item.

look up the items I want on both web sites.... fill a basket.... note what's in stock and what's not.... calculated shipping..... hit check out now on whichever one is lowest.

I've yet to place an on-line order with Cabelas as Midway has won the race every time.

Usually the issue is stock status.

That said, I sneak of to Cabelas (45 min. drive) when I get the chance and usually walk out the door with bullets, die sets, powder, primers or ammo....

I love to bring the kids along and "shoot" with them at the shooting gallery. They go up to the receptionist with their big smiles and say "may I have some tokens please" and come back with their fists full.

My "go-to" companies tend to be Midway and Natchez, and to a lesser extent, Cabelas, Gander Mountain, EABCO, and CDNN. I haven't really been able to determine an absolute, hard-fast "better pricing" among my preferred companies. Prices seem to fluctuate depending on their distributors, and the deals they're able to pass on at any given time.

When I know I want a particular product, I check among the various companies to see who is offering the best price. Of course, some companies don't carry certain product lines, which eliminates them automatically for that purchase.

.

I shop at Midway and buy from Natchez about 90% of the time. Crappy web site, great prices and customer service.

Ha, ha...! :D

I agree about the crappy Web site -- sometimes, I do a search on other sites to find out what a product is specifically called, just so I can find it on the Natchez site. But I also agree that their prices tend to be excellent.

Thankfully, have never had to avail myself of their customer service -- but I don't know of anyone that gets a product from their supply room to your door any faster...!

i order mostly from brownels, even though their website is by far the crappiest. their search engine sux. you'd figure the biggest online gun parts retailer in the world would have an easier to navigate website.

midwayusa has a better site, by far.

cabelas is generally a rip-off. i only order ffrom them when i have cabela's bucks to spend.

I too have a local store so it saves on shipping, its only 2 miles from me. Cabellas has some pretty radical online sales on clothing that I like to use. I buy ammo locally. I use Midway quite a bit also. Consumer beware, shop around before buying.

I have to pay tax on any Cabela's or Midway purchases and I still end up doing most of my purchasing from them. What I have found is generally Cabela's prices end up being better since they will ship to the store for free and I can pick either pick it up, or just go the store and grab it off the shelf. I almost always have some sort of discount coupon or code for Cabela's, so even with the tax it ends up being better priced than other online vendors since the shipping almost always exceeds the tax. Bullets, powder and primers are almost impossible for me to buy online and actually save money since the hazmat charges and/or shipping charges for bullets always eats up any savings on the item price.

I used to to buy stuff at Cabela's until I found out that they actually support progressive / anti-gun web sites. You can go to the think progress web site (thinkprogress.org) and once in a while you'll see their advertisement .

I'm a progressive too. Progressively seeking better deals:D. I only buy from Midway and Cabelas when they have an item(s) on sale which negates their excessively high shipping and handling charges. I like to spread my business to the smaller companies. I recently ordered from Top Gun Supply in Ohio and they are a great company. Got a 1980 HK PSP magazine, used, but very good condition at 33% less price than the bandits on other sites, including Midway charging $73. Also TopGun made a thread protector for my Sig P220 Combat.

Since Cabela's is more than just shooting, why would you thin they WOULDN'T advertise all of their hiking/camping/fishing/kayaking/clothing/etc. stuff to as many markets as possible?

Is it me, or do many folks here not realize that the shooting community is VERY small compared to many other outdoor pursuits?
