Midway USA Dogtown bullets (.223 Remington) 55 Gr Hollowpoint

Does anyone have any experience with these bullets? I have only Varget powder, I have a Sierra complete data book, but they only list sierra bullets..
I was wondering if anyone here has some data for these with varget, and the OAL I should seat them to, thanks, I'm fairly new to loading, and this will be my first venture outside of the Sierra brand..

never shot them but if you search, you may find reports of them coming apart before they hit the target.

Try V-MAX still cheap and fly awesome/accurate!!!

if you shoot "stuff" like apples, zucchini, pop cans= huge fun.

use data from a couple sources with a similar bullet if you already bought them

The Dog Town bullets are of pretty much conventional construction--lead core with a copper jacket.

Chose a bullet of the same weight and construction and you can use the starting load. Then work up and watch over pressure signs.

I also use a chronograph for additional information to help establish if I am pushing the pressure limits.

I doubt that you will find specific loading data. A program like QuickLoad might give some additional information.

Mt 17 Remington rifles don't like the 20 grain 17 caliber bullets from Dog Towns but my .22 caliber centerfires do fine with the.224 caliber bullets.

Bought and used 2000 dog towns never again out of shape jackett pealing just poor quality.

I have shot maybe 2000 of them in the last three years out of a Rem788 in .222Rem.
Loading 19.8g of IMR4198. My daughter shoots this gun on Pdogs in SD and Wy with consistent accuracy out to 350 yards. Pure hogwash about them coming apart unless you are pushing them at warp speeds. I do know that the aren't the best out of my Rugger 77VT 22-250 at max load. But that .222 shoots great.

I'm on my second 500-bullet box of Dogtown 55 HPs.

From my.22-250 CZ 550 heavy-barrel varmint rifle (4.5-14X Pentax scope) I have fired five CONSECUTIVE groups of five rounds each that were all at or under 1/2"/100 yards. that is ample accuracy for me!

The load is 39.0 H380, velocity 3800 fps. I have never seen any irregularity in the the holes which might indicate a problem with the jackets...these bullets just shoot very well.

Thanks for the info, I think they'll be ordered today, the reason I'm ordering these over the V-Max, A-Max, or Blitzking, is because they are extremely cheap at 11.00 a box of 100, and if my gun likes them, I will stock up on them.

I ordered some Midsouth Varmint Nightmare bullets in 223. These are said to be identical bullets to the dogtowns. I load these using H335 to a velocity of 2,920 fps. Never a jacket shred thus far. Accuracy is excellent in the sub moa to 200 yards.

I've loaded the dogtown's with Varget with pretty good results out of my 16in 1:9 AR. I think I settled in at a little over 26gr and it cronographed right around 2950fps. I didn't use the crony on my 20 or 24 in barreled AR's but I will in the near future.

I'm currently shooting 55gr dog pills out of my 243 and getting good results. Not seeing any flaws in manufacture, getting clean-edge holes in the paper

I'm on my 3rd season of prairie pup trips with 50gr Dogtowns. Switched to them because of the prices. I shoot .223 and .223 Ackley in slow twist (1:14)custom bbl ARs. Just chronoed a new Ackley at 3555fps and a dime would cover the group (at 100). They suit my purpose. BTW, they do not seem to cause as much "reaction" with targets as the Rem hollow points I used before, but good enough.
I don't use Varget, so I can't help on that point.

I have shot the HPs with no problem for carbine fun but never tried to print groups. The SPs shot almost as well as Sierra MKs.

I bought 1000 of the Dogtown 243 cal 55 grain soft points and shot over a hundred of them before giving up on them. Over 3200fps they didn't make it to the target. When I dropped the velocity to where they made it to the target then about 1 out of 5 key holed. Went to 58gr V-Max and problems went away.

Well, I guess for 11.00 bucks I'll just have to try 'em out..
I have 69 grain SMK's too, but if I shoot a coyote, I don't want much bullet getting through him, and going somewhere else, so I'm gonna load light and zero 'em in, and I might work up a 1200-1500 fps load with these too using pistol powder if I get around to it.

I think after reading all the good about them, ill give some a try to in my 243. Im telling you though....V-Max are sweet!! Like little grenades. and only 4 dollars more We dont have and prarie dogs in MI but crows and coyotes and big fat woodchucks a plenty.

Also what do you mean by you don't want much bullet going through him? I shot one with my .338 and it still crawled/ dragged itself about 50 feet. They can be tough critters and shots on the run usually don't land where u want. I always worry if i shoot a yote with the v-max, or any varmint bullet, he might just get a nasty wound and run off. Probably still die, but its better when its clean.

I'm confident in my shot placement, no offence if you shot once with a .338 and it crawled off you didn't place that shot very well, I have never heard of one walking away with a bullet in its skull..
and my .22 can't push a 55 grainer at 1500 fps, which will have a good bit more punch than a 40 grainer at 1100..

I've had great luck with dogtown 55s in my 1 in 9 20" AR.
26.2 gr of Varget gets 'em goin roughly 2950 fps

I'll probably reduce that 2 grains and load up I have a 1-9" barrel that's 20" too, just not an AR, it's an SPS Tactical.

I like the 55gr VNE HP and SP bullets, same as the Dogtown. I've loaded them from 2100fps with Blue Dot to 3071fps with TAC for my 16" 1:9 twist M&P. No problems across the velocity range. Great bullets for the price. Still prefer 50gr Vmax for maximum effect, but don't load nearly as many. $44/500 vs. $35/250.

somehow I was under the impression that they were just culled Win. bulk bullets sold cheap to Midway, who dreamed up the "catchy" brand name.

Dogtown 55gr

I just loaded up some dogtown .223 with Universal and they are very accurate @ 50 yrds. No ragged holes . I need to get to the range and see how they do out to 200. So far no problems. AR/1:9 twist 20"

The Dogtown bullets proved much more accurate in my AR (RRA Predator Persuit upper, 20" SS bull barrel, 1:8) at 100yds than the V-Max. Powder used was H335. I like them, and have loaded up a bunch to use specifically at closer ranges.
