I noticed that Midway USA had a variety of powders available previously, but now,,, none.

I rec'd an email from Midway earlier today:

Thanks to you, we’ve experienced tremendous growth in our business volume and number of products we offer. A couple of years ago, we projected we’d soon be out of space, so we started the largest project in company history. We’re now in the final stages of moving our Distribution Center about 5-miles down the road to a new facility, just west of Columbia, MO.

Our new Distribution Center is 400,000 square feet, with plenty of room for expansion. The unique new NITRO Express® Shipping System we’re installing consists of brand-new state-of-the-art equipment. This new system will be faster, more accurate and more efficient than our previous system.

Hoping the move is the reason for 'no powder' at this time.

I'm also hoping they've received several shipments of both powder and primers in the interim. (However unlikely that may be.)

Several of the "known to me" places have had "some powder" for a while now. So I have to guess Midway is telling the truth. Since I can still buy powder today if I needed it. A place like Midway to up and move the entire operation is a task most who never worked in the industry would not even fathom.

When I read that headline my first thought was, "Why would anybody care that they're moving their Domain Controller?" :scrutiny:

I got the email as well. I have been getting all kinds of notices for powder and primers. I'm good though so no worries. Brownells had 1 lb Varget limit 2. By the time you added tax, shipping and hazmat it was about 70 bucks a lb. Glad I don't need any.

The places I am seeing with powder again have dropped the limits. I have LONG bought powder and primers by order just because of convenience. To do so of course you have to order the max they will ship in one order to spread out that fee. For me its never been anything as stored properly the stuff will outlive the buyer and these panic shortages ALWAYS come back. Many seem to forget. This is FAR from the first and will not be the last. For those who do not want to buy that much of course just find another shooter to go in with and split and order if possible.

I was at Midway yesterday picking up some stuff and asked if the Ukraine thing was a factor and was told no. Powder is required to be stored off site in some kind of special bunker and has to be pulled from stock and transported to shipping location for each order. My take is they are in transition from existing location to new location and new shipping process, and that was source of current issue of "availability".......or lack thereof.

Customer pickup window moves to new location in next week or so.

"We" - the handloading community - won't feel the effects of the Ukraine debacle for several months. What we're seeing now are the normal cause-effect patterns of booming inflation - fuel costs, labor costs, transportation costs, insurance costs, taxation, raw and process materials costs - all of which feeds into a cycle of new buying and selling. It's not just "supply-and-demand" - read Adam Smith again - it's VALUE, both real and perceived, of the one and only irreplaceable raw material necessary to produce anything: people. The distribution of labor is the determining factor in all value discussions.

Since no one in the media nor government has answered, here’s a question for you to ponder/answer…where are all the darned workers? Pandemic related taxpayer handouts ended a long time ago but the labor participation rate is still several % below pre-pandemic levels. Are folks just that flush they don’t need work?

My understanding is that they were not allowed by city zoning to stock primers either...anything "explosive". Powder and primer orders were drop shipped from primary distributors. That's why, if ordering both primers and powder, one would pay two HAZMATS.

I've been reading about life insurance payouts and funeral home businesses recently. Deaths ages 18 to 49. You and I both know "the media" will not be giving us any answers to what those two business are experiencing and how this effects the workforce.

Email said about 2 weeks for the move to happen.

At least they are honest... Our main paint warehouse in TX moved from mesquite to lewisville. Both part of the DFW metro. They said 2 days, which was a total lie. Thats physically impossible with 100s of thousands of gallons of paint.
I just placed an order for in-stock & clearance items. Says it processed immediately and is in transit. Est. delivery day is 3/23. Realy, Midway can only do so much about how long it takes to get to you. UPS/USPS take their time.

My last Midway order was only delayed one day but UPS had problems and added two days extra. I bet UPS and FedEx will have more delays as they try to streamline routes because of $5.00+ diesel.
Diesel is projected to go over $7 in most states by summer.

But, that's actually really good news! This newer diesel is good, clean, environmentally-friendly, imported oil from Venezuela and the Middle East, not that nasty, greed-soaked, capitalist, domestic Big-Oil oil (p'tooey!). For every $10 more you spend on this new No-Drill, No-Big-Oil oil, a baby Polar Bear gets one more square foot of Arctic ice to stand on. Now, don't you feel better? :)

When I order powder or primers for local customer pickup, it comes from the same customer service door as anything else. Usually a few more hours delay, but certainly locally sourced. Their best time so far was ready for pickup in about an hour after I hit "submit". Didn't realize it but they offer customer pickup 363 days per year. Only closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

It could be a matter of quantity limits for storage in the city. I have experience with paying two HAZMATs and learned my lesson to shop elsewhere, if ordering both powder and primers.
