I had not looked at Midways black powder guns lately and went and took a look. They now have listed a bunch of "Refurbished" Uberti's. They have 1851's, 1860's, Dragoons, Walkers & Remington's. This is the first time I have seen new "Refurbished" guns for sale. Something new pops up everyday.

I've been trying Midway's website... but links are not loading (at least, not for me today). Other sites seem to be working just fine though.

Yes...but if you bought a new one, and then had it refurbished, it'd cost more.

I'm thinking these are returns from previous sales. You would think they would reduce the price more than 10%. What does refurbish mean, they wiped the finger prints off?

It'd definately be something to make some inquiries about. I'd hate to get one like that Pietta 1858 Bison I received last year ! Thankfully it turned out fine in the end.

I would want to know exactly what they refurbished and what was left "used" if anything, pits in the bore, marks on the cylinder stops, pitting under the reblue? Part of the joy of getting a Uberti is the high levels of fit and finish they tend to have, or at least mine do, was this lost during the "refinish"?

Open box, used and returned items are not usually the same as refurbished items.
You never know but you can always expect some kind of ding, mark or scratch.
Those kinds of things sometimes can even be present with a factory new gun.
They get proof fired and workers can slip and booger up screws and such too.
Usually marks are going to appear the first time the cylinder is turned or fired anyway.
Since I believe that Uberti offers some kind of factory service in the U.S., then I think that it's possible that these Midway guns are being refurbished by trained repair technicians.
I think that when they make gun exchanges with dealers and individuals due to returns or flaws, then after they accumulate a bunch of them they work on making them appear like new. If that involves swapping out and fitting some new parts then that's probably what they do.
Too bad you don't see Pietta or Cabela's offering "refurb's" at a discount.
If you've ever sent a relatively new gun to any major gun maker for a warranty repair there's a chance there will be an additional small ding or three when it's returned and there may even be a small stamp put on it to indicate that a factory repair was performed.
The computer companies sell exchanges as refurb's too.
Sometimes the fix makes it work better than factory new and sometimes it doesn't. It's just the luck of the draw and some days you just might be feeling lucky and want to take a chance and order one of those refurb's.
Now someone told me that Lyman destroys the used muzzle loaders that are returned to them because they don't know if they were fired with smokeless powder or not and they don't want to be liable. They may salvage small parts to use as free replacements on request but not the barrels.
But every company has their own policies.
