So I just ordered a new Ruger B/A in 22 Mag. My thought was "No one I know uses 22 Mag, there'll be plenty ammo available". Well I was wrong. I reload for all my guns except rimfires, so I really haven't been affected much by the panic till now! This has to be hurting sales of rimfire guns as well as hunting licenses. I know it's a dead horse but in y'alls expert opinion, how much longer will this last? Are any of you at the point of just dumping your rimfire guns?
:fire::banghead:

I'm keeping my rimfire guns and have cut way back on shooting them, at least until rimfire ammo starts to return to store shelves. Just got to be patient I guess.

Flame me, but I can only think it really IS a conspiracy.

It almost defies all sense of good business to believe that NO factory anywhere in the world is cranking out 22LR by the billions.

I just can't swallow it as a mere "shortage." Not even with massive demand.

I dealt in gold bullion coins and when a certain product was in extreme demand, mints went into overdrive. (but then again, there were MANY substitutes)

I just can't buy this.

I got lucky, about a year and a half or so ago I found a really good deal on 22mag's ordered about 4,000 rounds for about .14c a round. man would the wife be mad if she knew how much I spent. needles to say I have an abundance of 22mag. now if I could only find some 22lr. oh well like the 22mag better anways. hang in there don't sell your rimfires just yet supply will catch up with demand( hopefully one day soon).

Factories are basically all working round the clock.
The issue is that they can't keep up. Their own stockpiles are depleted, and they built and tooled up for normal demand. If they could keep up with current demands, half their tooling and storage investments would be collecting dust instead of profits whenever 90 percent of the time.

Once the hoarders and scalpers chill, things will settle down to a normal, slightly-more-expensive-than-they-were level.

I reload, and can get the components I need so I have been shooting a lot more centerfire than rimfire. I have found .22 in dribs, and drabs so still have some, and I always kept a decent stock, but never "hoarded", and I won't now.

It is anyone's guess how long the shortage will last.

No. I shoot rimfire 4-5 times a week.

Before the shortage I stocked up on plenty of rimfire and reloading components.

By dumb luck I'd got about 25K .22lr just before Thanksgiving. Didn't worry too much about it as I expected things to be better by now :(

Shooting mostly 9mm reloads and 7.62x39 these days and saving the remainder of my .22lr for my wife to shoot when our not-summer season arrives.

I would normally run about 2000 rounds of .22lr in a month, and 3-4000 during the four not-summer months my wife shoots with me. She is a total wimp about the heat and neither of us like to shoot indoors, much preferring steel plates or other reactive targets.

The ammo situation is already starting to get better locally. But I do wish I'd bought that used .32 H&R Mag Marlin 1894 I saw a few years back. It would have basically been a reloadable .22 to me.

The ammo situation is much less bad than it was.

.22lr is just the last to return. Being the most popular and common cartridge in the country (most likely)...that is the most affordable...that people buy when they can't get or afford enough centerfire...that isn't too surprising.

22 LR should return to the shelves by Christmas. The hoarders will need to spend their money on holiday shopping and then the increased production will hit the shelves like a tidal wave.

If I am an ammo maker and I can make way more money and sell more product by cranking out 5.56, 7.62, .40, 9mm and .45 why would I take those machines off line to load .22? Sure lots of people shoot it but of the profit margins are not there why should I bother?

I shoot a few hundred rounds of 5.56 a month in competition and have not bought a box of factory ammo in nearly a year. And what I did buy was for my 375H&H, no shortage there. There is no vast conspiracy. What you are seeing is an unprecedented growth in gun owners and new shooters. Sure some people are just hoarding, but that is their business. When the bottom drops out let them eat all that ammo. See how far that gets them.

Academy Sports here TODAY had maybe 20 boxes of Remington .22 lr for $2.59 a box of 50. They had lots more but that is all that is left when I got there late today.

And Remington 'Yellow Jacket' 50 round boxes for $3.59 a box. I think maybe 30 or so boxes are left.

And TONS of rifle and pistol ammo.

Gander Mountain also had lots of regular rifle and pistol ammo (but no .22 lr.)

Give 'em time folks and stop paying scalper prices.

I walked into Walmart this afternoon/evening. And there was a box of .22lr, Federal bulk, for 4.4 cents per round sitting on the shelf.

Plenty of 9mm brass, bullets, and spp's...

9mm and .45 ACP have become my new .22LR. I will not sell my .22's, but I've not shot them in months. I actually should probably move my ammo to some sort of long-term storage solution. Not real sure how, though.

Oh, well then, how about a THIRD term Warp?
:banghead:

I guess the current status of .22lr availability has absolutely nothing to do with your question regarding opinions of how long rimfire ammunition won't be readily available?

:banghead:

They were stocking the shelves with 100 round boxes of Winchester Super X .22 LR (37 grain, 1330 FPS, HP copper plated) as I was walking by this after noon. One full case went onto the shelves. I bought three boxes. I don't know what I paid for it. :scrutiny: I just ran out to the car and dug out the receipt. $7.70 or so for 100 rounds.

I've been loaning my SA .22 pistol to friends so they can do the CCW class. I've been giving away ammo & selling at cost to the people taking the class. This ammo helps.

Almost nothing on the shelves at wally world. Even 12ga is rare. 243 & 270 are almost as hard to find as 22LR. hey might be getting some in, but I don't sleep in the parking lot waiting for deliveries.

That sucks.

12 gauge has been EVERYWHERE that I have gone around here lately. Walmart has a great selection and Academy Sports has seemingly every single 12 gauge round in their system stocked deep on the shelves...and every Walmart has had .243 and .270 for months.
