Not sure if shooting it will possible, is there a good public range somewhere around Columbus, OH , or south by I-71? I would need a pistol + shotgun range.

Do you know of anyone (friends etc.) who has a place / land that is safe to shoot on?
The area around Columbus has a lot of hills so finding a place may not be that hard.

I would have a tough time getting rid of a 1911 right now (actually...ever.)

But at least you are getting a semi-auto shotgun, so it's kind of a wash. The next AWB will likely follow other countries and go after both pistols and semi-auto shotguns. It's likely they will allow us subjects to buy 870s for at least a little while.

Financially, it seems like a fairly even trade for both of you with the extra barrel and cash. $500 seems a little high, but not way out there.

Emotionally, I like 1911s, but 1100s and Ruger MK2s also have a lot of "soul", so it's kind of a wash.

Just a couple of quick points about your gun deal:

1) The deal in terms of what you're getting and what you're receiving is a wash.

2) Since you're getting used guns, there's always a risk of getting one that doesn't work. The 1100 looks nice, but that doesn't mean it's gonna run; same applies to the Ruger. The good news both are well designed and usually the 'fixes' aren't that expensive.

3) While the 1100 requires more maintenance than an 870, it's really not that big a deal. I've owned several 1100's and I presently own 3 of the Sporting models. I love 1100's and IMHO think they represent the best VALUE of any gas operated shotgun on the market today.

4) Comparing the cost of an 870 to an 1100 can be deceiving. If you compare a Wingmaster (polished blue/walnut) with a field grade 1100, the difference is a lot less than comparing it to an Express.

5) The gas ring issue is overrated. I've fired tens of thousands of rounds through 1100's and NEVER had to replace a gas ring, but even if a replacement is needed it's FIVE BUCKS from Remington. Five dollars isn't even a good tip anymore!

Good luck with your decision...

Nice looking post-1979 1100. I would say it is probably worth about $350 to $400 with the skeet barrel, based on what I can see. It is a great gun, but the numbers of them out there keep the prices down. With that skeet barrel it will be a sweet shooter. A gas semi auto is the way to go for clay pigeon shooting, with the possible exception of competetive trap. I do not notice recoil hunting, but I do shooting clays, and I like that soft shooting 1100.
I have five 1100s and an 870, dating from 1963. I have replaced one (1) 'O' ring on a 20 gauge, because it had a stringer hanging from it, and the metal one on the '63 because I didn't want to lose that. Neither gun was malfunctioning. I now have about 30 spare 'O' rings in 3 gauges that it appears I will die with.
An 1100 gas system does require cleaning. I do not know how often it requires it, because I always clean mine after shooting. It take a whole 5 minutes if I don't hurry.
If an 1100 fits you, you will not find a better gun for shooting clay targets in my opinion. If it doesn't, you need another gun. All the people who blast non-flying targets with their shotguns and advise everyone else to get the same gun they have do not get it. In order to get good at wingshooting, you must have a gun that at least fits semi-good. If a single shot H&R Topper fits you better than anything else, that is the gun you need. (You must also be a weird looking dude, too:eek:)
If you get it and don't like it, as long as you do not abuse it you should not lose any value.
It is not I-talian. It does not even look Euro. Some people actually like those factors, too.:D

I passed on the trade, and now am getting a Remington 870 Super magnum, and a new browning buckmark slab slide that I really wanted. Thanks for all the 1100 advice, I'll probably be asking about the 870 soon. The guy is about 10 mins away from me too, which is a huge factor for me. Thanks again.
