So Im sure a lot of us are aware of the show "Dirty Jobs" Mike Rowe has on the Discovery Channel. Its a very entertaining show and it shows what hard work many Americans have to face to earn a living.

So one day I catch the beginning of a segment where he is standing there in ACU's with two soldiers and a humvee. They are talking about how hazardous it is to run supply convoys during combat. So one of the soldiers hands Mike Rowe an M16 and Mike sorta gets this nervous look and says "Thats a gun?"

Soldier says "Thats not a gun soldier. Its a rifle"

Then they go off to do a combat exercise that simulates and ambush and explain more about the job.

To me that this man Mike Rowe just did not seem comfortable around guns. The guy who wades through slop and mud, dust, sands, hammers, drywall etc to have a very entertaining show.

Its hard to explain, but I just felt it was worth sharing. It was rather weird to see. Even without military training I know to call an M16 a weapon or rifle. Still a good show.

I saw that show.
He seemed to have nothing but respect for the soldiers he was with, and you don't hear much about his political leanings elsewhere in the series.

My guess is he pretends to be a punching bag for the sake of the audience. That and there is something rather uncomfortable about being invited to change tires and shovel mud... then suddenly being handed a rifle and bodyarmor :uhoh:

Some people are that way. It is odd when you think someone would be more manly.

You see that here in Hippie Dippy land all the time.

Manly?

Get a grip. Your firearm is not an extension of your manhood.

I'd rather have someone ADMIT that he knows diddly, and is uncomfortable with something, than bluster through it, and maybe either injure/kill himself, or injure/kill others.

It's his job to look befuddled, bewildered, and just generally uncomfortable about every aspect of the work being highlighted and he does it well.

He may, or may not, care for firearms but he doesn't strike me as the type to be frightened by them.

Hey bogie, It means I agreed with your statement you pompous ingnoramus.

Im a shooter...yea...too cool for school

Not sure what bogie's problem is with the all-too-ubiquitous "+1", but this kind of response will make for a very short life on THR.

An apology is in order.

I saw that show, too. He did a bunch of stuff with the military (Army, I think), the majority of which didn't involve guns at all.

His attitude throughout was very respectful of the jobs and the men and women doing them, I thought. He may have been completely ignorant of firearms, but I can't see anything wrong with that. It's certainly natural to be a little nervous around a dangerous implement you're unfamiliar with.

How did I not recognize his voice on Deadliest Catch?

You hand me a powered plumbing snake, and I'll scream like a little girl...

HAHAHA ROFL thanks, seriously I know nothing about plumbing, yard work, interior decorting...etc.

Things I do know.

I've seen the show several times and to get squeemish over a rifle? I saw him swimming with sharks in a shark protection suit, I mean holy crap!

Remember his getting ready for the sharks?
(shark strikes bait)
That's a big shark! You did see the shark?!?

and "You're turning me into bait!"

He has his share of nervous

Bogie - 4500 and some last time I looked.

Bogie has been here longer than most of us.

His reaction to the "+1" is something YOU are missing.

This is The High Road. +1's, IBTLs, all that crap is not welcome here.

The generally recognized purpose of that junk is only to drive up post count when the typer has nothing else to add really.

If you want to agree with someone, take the time to type it out. If you want to debate, do that too, but don't do the usual stuff to drive post count for no reason. It's simply not welcome here.

That said, welcome to THR, since you are clearly new. You will find this place much better than most if you will accept and embrace the difference.

If not, there are plenty of +1 and IBTL places to go.

I saw that episode too. Even if he knew a thing or two about guns he'll act like he doesn't. That's part of the act. He's supposed to go into a job he knows nothing about and learn how to do it. If he immediately field stripped the thing, reassembled it and put 10 rounds into a tight group it wouldn't be a learning experience like all the episodes are.

Uh... WTH does IBTL mean?

And what he said... I'm also tired (and ranting about it...) of people basically posting "my mommy and daddy won't let me buy an AK-47, and isn't this story that three people have already linked to really cool? I know I'd shoot (him/her/it/indeterminate alien creature) with my .45 cal AK-47 if I had one!"

Rowe has a fun and interesting TV show. He also is generally smart enough (or experienced enough -see reference to power plumbing snake...) to tell whoever he is working with/for when he knows nothing about what he's doing.

As for the other thing - that's some of that "reality" TV, right? I don't watch that crap.

I agree that the "+1" is frowned upon but its ususally when it is the only thing included in the post, like you said, to raise a post count when the poster has nothing new to add. I think the "+1" is ok as long as it is followed up by an explaination of why you agree with the original poster. It is all in how it is used.

For example, I would have followed up the "+1" to bogie saying that we shouldn't frown on fear of guns we should respect it. Just because someone is uncomfortable holding a gun doesn't mean that they are necessarily anti-gun. I know a lady that was afraid of guns telling her soon to be husband that she didn't want a gun in their house until he took her to the range and taught her to use it safely. Now she is an avid shooter and actually a better shot than her husband.

Uh... WTH does IBTL mean?

I think it means "I Beat The Lock". It is what people type when they just try to get a post in to increase their post count before a thread is closed.

Personally, I've never understood the thing about "post count." Either I have something to say, or I move on the the next thread.

I have not seen the show as I don't have TV here. However, I do agree that acknowledging that one is unfamiliar/untrained with a tool beats the macho-posturing alternative.

Powered drain snakes don't scare me (any more. :D )

Uh... WTH does IBTL mean?

In Before The Lock.

Used on "those boards" when someone has done something so
a) stupid or
b) far off topic that intervention by a mod is almost certain.

And with that, I'm IBTL since we're way off topic . (And that's the only time you'll see me use it).

You ought to seek employment with Jerry Bruckheimer's production companies, as his movies tend to include all of the above. Sometimes in the same scene.

You know, I wondered if someone would bring post count into it...

Thanks for the welcome, but I've been here for a little while. I just don't post very often.
I felt a bit compelled to when dontburnmyflag called bogie a "pompous ignoramus". There is a clear rule here about personal attacks, a difference I do indeed accept, embrace, and intend to adhere to myself and to encourage in others as a member of The High Road.
My first thought was to report the post to a mod, but then thought, no, let's just handle this like gentlemen.
Perhaps requesting an apology on behalf of another was seen as presumptuous.

As for the "+1" thing, my description of it should have indicated to you that I also find it to be an overused and mildly annoying device; just not enough to personally insult a fellow member.

Bottom line: if a high post count gives me a license to call someone a pompous ignoramus, then maybe I do need to find another board.
