I am rebarreling a Garand in either 30-06 or .308, I haven't decided which yet. One plus for the .308 chambering would be the option of shooting modern surplus ammo. Does anyone here know if the pressure curve on modern 7.62x51 mil spec will cycle a Garand without damaging the operating rod?

Well I would definitely go for 308 for standardization. Why have many different calibers in the same class when they all practically do the same thing?

However, I dont know the answer to the pressure question.

When I got mine converted by Deans Gun Restorations, I asked him to headspace it so I could shoot both .308 and 7.62x51 ammo. He said no problem, he does them like that all the time. I've shot Portuguese, South African and Australian surplus through it and have had no problems at all.

I also asked Dean what commercial match ammo I could shoot in it. He told me that Federal or Black Hills 168gr or 175gr. match ammo would be fine and not hurt the rifle in any way. I've only shot a few boxes of 168 gr. Federal and BH though it, along with some Hornady TAP, but it hasn't hurt the rifle at all.
