So, what parts kits are there available to build to complete weapons, and which are are actually feasible?

I'm talking about buy the kit, buy the receiver, and TA-DA!

1. Various ARs - obvious
2. Various AKs - again obvious

But what kind of INTERESTING military rifles can someone just MAKE from a collection of parts???

3. FN FAL's
(Eh, OK.)

4. UZI's :what:
(OOH. I want to build an UZI.)

5. MG-42's
(So I've seen the kits on gunbroker, has anyone actually built one up?)

6. PPS-various russian submachineguns
(Same thing as MG42s, can I buy one of those kits and build it? Where would you get the destroyed parts?)

7. Sten Guns :what:
(Another OOH. DEFINITELY want to build a sten.)

Any other neat weapons just waiting to be assembled???

"Feasible" depends on what sort of shop tools you have and what sort of work you're willing to do. The only no-tools-required build is an AR lower, lower parts kit, and complete upper.

Other builds require various combinations of pressing, riveting, drilling, milling, and welding. One of the issues with the less common builds is converting the designs to semiauto only, which requires doing things like replacing fixed firing pins with hammer or striker systems, replacing FCGs, changing bolt dimensions, etc. If you have some machine work experience and tools, there are a bunch of kits that could make really cool projects for you. If you've got a Dremel and a vise, not so much.

You might want to pass on assembling a full auto weapon from unregistered parts.--Unless you enjoy jail time.

Now for semi auto only AR parts kits an AK kits enjoy.

I would suggest you take this request over to a few other places:

www.akfiles.com
www.falfiles.com
www.ar15.com
www.uzitalk.com
www.mg42.us
www.1919a4.com
www.weaponeer.net

(and quite a few others...)

You don't even need to post a question. Just look in their stickies in the "How-To" sections.

They'll all explain what parts you need from the original gun (parts kit), what parts you'll need to buy or make, what tools this will require, and what laws you need to know about in order to stay legal.

Unfortunately you're probably going to find out that the great majority of "cheap" and simple build up projects are a thing of the (recent) past due to some reinterpretations of importation laws, etc., but they're all do-able if you really want to.

Just be careful not to ask ANYWHERE for information on how to do something that would be against the law. That won't be either answered, nor received well -- AT ALL -- on any legitimate site. If you stumble into accidentally asking for "dangerous" info and someone gets hostile, apologize and ask them how to stay on the right side of the law. These things can be confusing and illogical, so there's no harm in asking, but folks get VERY testy when it looks like someone is fishing for info that will get somebody sent to jail.

Good luck on your search!
