The truth of the matter is that the mil-dot scale is for quick taget range assessment, and rapid target acquisition. A shooter needs to know how to range off the scale, and then get hold over (or under) and lead on a target for wind or movement. The turret adjustment, MOA or other, is simply to sight the rifle in, or if time permits, dialing in a total target adjustment (better be writing down all your adjustments so you can go back to your chosen "zero"). I sight my .300 Win Mag. in at 700 yards, to maximize my mil-dot scale out to 1100 yards, to acquire targets without any other physical adjustment. This works for my one load that I have chosen, and I have a ballistic chart to tell me where it SHOULD impact at any given range on the mil-dot scale, while sighted for 700 yards. You need to pick one load, calculate your ballistics, set your "crosshair" zero, and then shoot at ALL possible ranges (I like 100 yards intervals, out to my max range) to get a hands-on, real life point of impact, so that you can plot ACTUAL points of impact for those given ranges on my mil-dot reticle. It may take many range outings, at different distances, to get a compiled ballistic chart. Conditions, such as temp, windage, elevation, etc, will also affect results. The internal adjustments, be they .1MOA, or 1/4", etc, will become of small importance to all the other things you need to use or do to get the needed info on you gun and load.
