well, nobody was interested in the 870 express i had so the dealer offered me an even up trade for a yugo m48.i have another 870 and went ahead anyways and got the yugo.it had everything except a roll of paper towels to clean it off for inspection prior to picking the one.the sling was like new, bayonet and the other stuff will go in a drawer.the only thing i do not like about this gun is the trigger,it has alot of take up before it releases and feels gritty just before so(it could be cosmaline,i didnt try taking apart the bolt...yet)bore very shiny though after finally getting all the cosmaline from it and the rest of the gun.the ffl gave me some modern commercial ammo to try,he just started selling these and was curious about the gun.questions; what can be done to make that trigger better.do german 98k bolts fit the yugo?triggers?p.s.,i had a heck of a time getting the sight hood back on after removing it for cleaning..any secrets to make it easier?

still waiting on mine to show up, so take this for a grain of salt as it's based on reading not tinkering....

1.what can be done to make that trigger better.
The easy way is replacing the trigger with a drop-in unit.
The harder but cheaper way is welding a little tab on the trigger itself.. this a friend of mine learned from a 50's era gunsmithing book. If you're interested I'll ask him for details.

2. do german 98k bolts fit the yugo?
doubt it, the yugo has a slightly shorter action than the German

3.triggers?
no idea.

4....i had a heck of a time getting the sight hood back on after removing it for cleaning..any secrets to make it easier?
rmm.... dunno. :)

ok..drop in triggers.any particuliar brand that works best?any to stay away from.i dont have a welder nor access to one so the tab idea is out.are these easy to scope..does one have to have tabs welded to the receiver for the bases?..will the yugos do the job for wild boar and bear?how does the mausers handle penetrating thick brush? thanks.

If the Mauser is a German K98 mauser redone by the Yugo's (which are commonly for sale now), a regular Mauser 98 bolt will fit. IF it is a Yugo 48 or 48A, they are a bit shorter in the action than regular and M98 bolts will NOT fit. Both kinds are common-and sometimes the ads selling them are confusing as to what they are.

In either case, a Timmany (SP?) trigger for about $35-40 will serve nicely and is easy to install even for the ham-handed such as myself.

As to using the 8mm for boar or bear, good, commercial ammo will serve nicely even though it is somewhat mildly loaded. Good reloaded ammo will do even better. It is in the 30-06 class, but commercial loads are of somewhat less energy and don't shoot as flat.

shot it today.am pleased to say the least.recoil not nearly as bad as i had thought.much like a 20 gauge shotgun.hit 2 liter pop bottles at 100 every single time.very loud down in that ravine.no bruises..nadda.will say this..the fencepost was shattered and the rounds were still going into the base of an ol tree and exiting them into the bottom of the hill.the rounds were chek made.would definatly be a good deer gun if i could legally hunt deer with it here.seems like a good shooter, surprised that they cost so little.critter.its a m48.all milled all matching and the gun looks like it just came out of the factory, the action was very tight.the german k98s that he had were about 75 more and they didnt look quite right, the bolts everything was black parkerized or something.bores were ok..not shiny or bright but ok.these m48s are a good buy.
