i went to the local gunshop and looked around a bit and got to check out a Taurus 45 auto.....a 145 model for $369....looking at the manufacturers site it is well below MRSP of $453. anybody got issues with this one? recalls, common malfunctions or anything else like that? the feel is great, i have pretty big hands so i like the 10rd grip vs single stack 6rd grip style. another week or two and ill have the cash for it. its my first auto i considered buyiing ....anything to look out for? what kind of velocity do you guys get from a 3.25" bbl using 200-230g ball?

I have the same one mine shoots great the only problem i had was with a magazine i got a bad one i contacted tarus and they are supposedly sending me a new one we will see as ive heard that there customer service stinks

Why does it say its a Double/single action but it has no external hammer? is that possible? i've noticed that on the 24/7 too. whats the deal? how does that even work? might as well make it a striker or a DAO...

I believe they refer to it as SA/DA not DA/SA. Meaning it's like a 1911 in that it's single action with a completely precocked striker, but it has second strike capability with a followup double action pull in case of misfire.

1858rem,
I have a PT 145 that I love! Having said that, I'll try to be objective:
You will read MANY pros and cons. Taurus has had the reputation for being "hit or miss" on quality and/or customer service. I have owned several Taurus autos and all were well made and fitted, functioned flawlessly, and generally a good value for the money. They are not of S&W or Sig quality finish, but they did (and my current Mil Pro does) work.

Taurus autos usually ship with a ton of packing grease. Clean it well initially, and lubricate sparingly, you should be good to go. I've put 500+ rounds of everything from WWB to Federal HSTs through mine without a failure. It is my every day carry.

Field stripping can be a challenge, and there is a trick or two that makes it easy. Check out the taurus forum and/or youtube for pointers.

There were 2 previous generations of the PT 145, a DAO and a DA/SA, both of which had reliability issues. Those have been resolved for the most part, and if you're looking at a 3rd Gen "Millenium Pro" SA/DA (as explained earlier) you have the best of the iterations.

Finally, the sights. The MilPro comes with Heine "straight 8" sights, a dot in front and a dot on the rear. Setting the front dot on the rear makes a figure 8 or a snowman. These are point of aim=point of impact sights. No 6 o'clock hold here, or you'll be several inches low on impact.

The current generation has a picatinny rail, if lights/lasers are important to you (they aren't to me). There are several excellent concealled carry holsters available from major manufacturers. There is a small number of after market sight packages available if you can't stand the Heine's. Beyond that there isn't much in accessories available, and, in my mind, not much it needs. I honestly believe that the PT 145 (or, mine, at least) compares favorably in performance to the current crop of compact .45s by Springfield, S&W, etc., at a very attractive price point. If you get a bad one (increasingly rare these days) it can give you fits. If you get a good one, as most current stock are, you might find the search for the best compact/concealed carry big bore is over.

My mom bought one for around $250 last year, and it has never malfunctioned.

The trigger is loooooong and not great, but gets the job done.

I sold mine after about a year of owning it. I originally purchased it for carry due to a well rounded configuration: high capacity 45 in such a compact package. The gun was reliable, but I did experience some light strikes with CCI ammo only. I sold it after my philosphy on carry guns chaged. I now preffer single-stack hight quality guns. It was not the funnest range toy either.

I had one for a couple years, the new generation with the rail.
I really liked it for carry, it is the same size as my xd9sc.
10 .45's in the same size package as 10 9mm's. Very Impressive.
I did sell it eventually, Two reasons. One- the trigger i just could not get used to long pull, kind of squishy. Second is the heinie sites did not suite me.
I would recommend renting one if you could.
That said, it was 100 percent reliable, never missed a beat.
And I would recommend one to anyone, with the caveat that you try before you buy.

when i pulled the slide back at the gun shop, i noticed the barrel seemed to come upward or something, was i seeing wrong or is it just weird like that?

had one it was a great gun, buddy liked it more then me so i put it on him and bought another XD.

but the taurus was a great and i would buy one again
