BEcause in many ways it is not part of the U.S. It lacks its own representatives etc and becomes the playground for Congress to enact the most pernicious legislation with no consequences.
The story is intolerable. The man deserves a full pardon and an apology from his country.

No act of Congress is responsible for this, but the local authorities Congress empowers to govern the city. Congress could fix this, but the D.C. City Council is responsible for the ordinance at the heart of this story.

I do agree that Specialist Meckler deserves a pardon and an apology.

"Here we go again."

This happened last September. I guess it didn't make the national news.

"Why does our nation's capital seem like it's not even a part of America?"

It's not. That's why it's the District of Columbia and not the State of Columbia. D.C. has no Senator and only one non-voting House member, but gets 3 Electoral votes for president.

Its a city that re-elected a crackhead as mayor after he was busted in a hotel with a hooker while smoking crack... does anyone really think DC is anything other then a toilet that all the crap (politicians) collects in...? One of the highest murder and violent crime rates in the country but with the strictest laws on the books, how come the criminals aren't following the laws??? Hmmm, maybe they need to make some more laws!!

I really hope someone with some common sense on capitol hill see this soldiers story and does the right thing.

This kind of bull dooky makes me so furious! I feel for the guy. A man who served his country and risked his own life gets treated even worse than some gang-banger off the street? How humiliating. It just saddens me that those who truly sacrifice the most get treated the worst and those who sacrifice nothing get royal treatment (government officials). He truly does deserve a huge apology. I know law is law no matter how stupid it is but there should also be leniency. Im pretty sure if that was some Democrat congressman nothing would have happened or Obama would pull some "executive" power play. I know thats a little off the deep end but like I said this stuff makes me upset :p

Even empty shell casings count under this prohibition, too. Even if you have a gun permit in DC, you can't own ammo for a gun you don't own.

I think that part of the law was changed recently, though it was still in effect when Spec. Meckler was charged and pleaded. Didn't matter anyway then, since he didn't have any kind of permit for D.C., so all ammo was illegal for him at the time.

Holy coco molie

I am looking at my range bag right now and there is an empty Blazzer aluminum casing that landed in there the last time i went shooting.

ugh... this is what Chicago is going to be like even after we get CCW :fire:

You can legally carry a concealed handgun in Chicago - you just need to secure yourself a position as a Chicago alderman first.

Chicago aldermen have had that right for DECADES.

Actually, it hasn't. I mistakenly thought it had also, when I brought a bag of brass to a guy at work who needed them.

And here's the rest of the story: http://www.washingtontimes.com/blog...-dc-arrests-vet-unregistered-ammunition-part/
Mostly, the veteran of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq wants others to learn from his experience so they don’t have their own records ruined by the District’s senseless firearms law.

As it turns out the ammunition restriction was lifted in May for residents, though it still applies to non-residents (such as Spec. Meckler). The D.C. City Council is supposedly considering lifting the ammo restrictions for non-residents too.

People who are not from DC should be able to possess a firearm there. DC residents should not need some special license to possess a firearm. Same goes for ammo.
