I just abought a Savage FV12 .223. I want ato scope the gun, and the only rings the local gun stores have in stock is Millett rings. How are these rings for center fire rifles? Any advice on breaking in the bbl?

I've had good success with Millet.

For break-in I prefer to wet the bore with FP-10 overnight then dry it out with patches. For the first 30 rounds I follow each one with a patch with FP-10 and then dry it out before firing the next round. After that I just clean after each range session (although I only shoot about 20 max at a session).

Millett Rings

My son has a set of Millett rings on his SavageVSS(?)12 in .308 Win. with a Springfield Armory 4-14x56mm scope. It is a rock solid setup.

For barrel break-in I recommend:

1 ) Good initial scrubbing with borebrush,hoppes#9,and patches until clean

2) 1-2 Break-free soaked patches followed by 1-2 dry patches

3) First 5 shots same procedure between each shot

4) Next 15 shots same procedure between 5 shot groups.

Lightly grease the bolt raceways and lugs and you're good to go! It's worked well for me.

Good luck and good shooting!

I replaced the Millet rings I had (adjustable, weaver version). Unless you get them set up right they will bend the scope (BAD!) and they will be useless if you want to remove and add the scope.

If I had a rifle where the bases was messed up I might get Millets to try to align the scope , but othervice I'd choose something else.

I use Millets a lot.

They're rock-solid, and as long as you keep your wits about you, the Weaver-style rings are perfectly fine for mounting a scope. If you bend a scope tube, it's because you weren't measuring the left-right adjustment between the front and back rings as you cranked them over, causing the rings to no longer be in alignment with the scope. :scrutiny:

Had I not wanted to be able to put the sight on and off I would probably have kept them, but as they where for a extra/reserv scope they didn't work (if I had thought about it for more then 2 sec when buing the scope I wouldn't have bought them).

Still wouldn't be my first choise for weaver rings, but I'm sure they can work if you mount them correctly.

I agree with this. Much more better options than Milletts for Weaver-type bases. IMO, not much better than Tasco rings.

Millets are the WORST examples of Weaver rings out there.

For something better---look to Leupold and Warne----you can get them online---so don't worry what the local shop has in stock.
