What is the best surplus ammo available in 308? I have always used factory ammo but finances are extremly tight.

Thanks,
Jeff

The Austrailian Surplus that is currently hitting the market is EXCELLENT ammo...........the most accurate and reliable Surplus I've shot.

It's available at a lot of places and the price is right, too.

I've heard a lot of good about the Australian. Haven't tried it yet. Haven't bought any since I started reloading...

My favorite before that was Portugese (FNM). I also lilked Hirtenberger, but haven't seen any of that for a long time.

With the Australian stuff, try to get 1990's production - I've found it significantly more accurate than the 1980's production.

Also, if you can find Hirtenberger anywhere, it's probably the best milsurp ammo I've ever used. I took it to Thunder Ranch for use in my Steyr Scout rifle during the General Purpose Rifle course, and was routinely shooting 1.5 MOA with it - absolutely outstanding performance from military ball. I haven't seen any for a long time, though - and no, you can't buy any of my approximately 1,000-round stash of it! :D

Whatever you do, don't touch the Indonesian, Indian, Greek or Korean stuff! :barf:

Thanks my local store has Hirtenberger but wants 13 bucks a box, and $50 per 160 rounds of Australian. So they are high compared to everyone else. Does anyone know of a store online that will sell under 21.
I was reading about that general purpose rifle course, how did you like it? If I ever scrape up enough money I need a vacation:D

Thankyou everyone
Jeff

Like everyone else has said, Hirtenberger and the Australian is the best out there in my experience.

As for selling to someone under 21, Ammoman (http://www.ammoman.com/) has a policy whereas if they don't have your driver's license on file with them, then they must send the package "Adult Signature Required". As long as you don't look too young, the UPS driver should accept your sig.

Ditto, Ditto and Ditto!:D :D :D

My buddie used the Portugese through his ar10 and it jammed every other round. When he runs factory there is no problem.
So I am staying away from the stuff.

What rifle are you looking ammo for?

Port's good ammo. His AR-10 must just be tight. It probably wouldn't like any 7.62x51
