I have a mini 14 I purchased used. It is marked 'ranch rifle' and has a serial number starting with 580. It is stainless steel with a synthetic stock.

The question I have is, does a wooden stock that fits this model exist, and if so, where do I find one? I've already ordered (and returned) three different stocks, one from Brownells and two from Numrich. On both sites it indicated that the stock would fit a 580 series rifle, but they most certainly did not (they were clearly 180-186 series stocks). I called Ruger to see if I could buy a wooden stock from them and was told that they do not offer a wooden stock for this model, nor do they make a wooden stock that will fit this model. Yet I've seen numerous postings on other websites, including on this one, seen pictures even, of 580 series rifles in what appear to be Ruger factory wood stocks. Are people just putting them in the stocks without the reinforcement brackets, or is there some secret place to buy a wooden stock from? I've spent more cash trying to put this rifle into a wooden stock than I have on the rifle itself!

What dosent fit? i didnt think there was much difference between the 580s and 581s, and ruger lists a wood 581.

The receiver does not fit into the stock if the reinforcement bracket is in. I did not see a 581 wooden stock on their site, and the rep I spoke to did not suggest one to me. Could you direct me to one?

*Note, I do have a Revolution Explorer stock currently that it rests in, but I have an itch to refinish a Ruger original birchwood stock, hence my quest

I just sold a 580-Series Mini Ranch Rifle (blue) and it was in a wood stock. I can't imagine there being any difference physically in a blued Mini and a stainless Mini.
Why don't you head over to the Perfect Union site and visit the Ruger Mini-14 and Mini-30 forum? I know someone there can answer your question and might even know where to find a stock. There are several on eBay right now in fact.

Good luck,
