due to the poor quality of mini 14 mags out there, is it possible to modify an ar15/m16 mag to fit and work in a mini 14?

1. I believe Eagle once made a high-cap magazine that fit both the AR15 and the Mini-14. Don't recall if it worked well.

2. You may try to find some PMI high-caps. They work flawlessly. This is based on my experience with five blue 30 round PMI magazines for my pre-ban Mini (purchased used -- I don't buy new Ruger products) , and also on a buddy's experience with his PMI mags. PMI pre-ban 30 rounders are generally available for $30-40 apiece.

If you look at an M-16 and a Mini-14 mag side by side, you'll notice that the Mini-14 mag is much narrower up front. You'd have to do MAJOR surgery on an M-16 mag to make it work in a Mini-14. (I have a Mini and some M-16 mags leftover from when I had an AR, so I looked into this.)

I concur with jthuang -- just get some PMI mags. That's what I did.

I am not sure if you could modify the mini as lugs from the trigger group latch into the metal area you would have to widen that also forms part of the mag well. PMI was the oem for ruger factory hicaps. I have had good luck with the eagle but they are polymer and can be stiff in the ar's mag well. I may be prejudice though as I have just sold my mini and I have the eagles for sale in the fore sale forum here.

For the Mini-14 Ranch, I bought Triple-K 10-rounders from Brownells, bent the lips up about .010 and polished them on a buffer. They work fine. A lot of work, though. 44

The "combo mags" that fit both AR's and mini's (and AR-180's) were made by Ram-Line. I have found them extremely reliable.

I have a USA (?) brand 20-rounder (probably made well before the 1994 rush) that works perfectly, and a Triple K (?) 30-rounder that also works flawlessly. I also have some nickel-plated post-ban mags that are absolute junk.
