I have a buddy trying to find the best all around shtf, defence, long term rifle in the 4 to 600 dollar range. He is currently stuck on the mini 14 or mini 30 or sks. I've been trying to steer him to the sks based on durability and parts availability, as I have heard the rugers are more accurate but not as tough, does anyone have any suggestions? He is likely to only be able to buy one in the near future. Thanks for the input.

as I have heard the rugers are more accurate but not as tough,

In a competition for accuracy between a new Mini14/30 and a well cared for SKS my money would be riding on the commie gun.

In my opinion there's NO reason to choose a Ruger mini over an SKS even if they cost the same, which they don't

I don't believe the mini 14 or mini 30 accepts high capacity magazines reliably. Personally, I'd prefer the mini 30 in 7.62X39, it's much cheaper to shoot than .223. Although, without the ability to reliably use high capacity magazines I'd avoid Ruger and buy a Saiga or something similar since we're looking for a SHTF rifle. So if we're relegated to the above three choices I'd choose the sks.

sks

I would recommended the SKS as you did. My reasons are simple. Given the money he has as a budget you could get the rifle as well as lots of ammo and a peep sight which will improve it's accuracy.

The sks is capable of 200 yards and further with practice and if your buddy can't pull combat accuracy out at two hundred yards with either rifle then he really needs an appleseed shoot weekend instead.

the 30 or 14 don't really have reliable high cap mags that are easy to find or cheap while stripper clips for a sks are plentifull and pretty quick in a real world situation with practice. the sks is also known for reliable ruggedness.

And if all else fails the commie gun has a bayonet attached to stick something.

Mini-14 vs. Mini-30, eh? That IS a tough call...6 piles o' dung on the one hand, half a dozen mounds of excrement on the other. Take your pick. :) :p

IMO, if you anticipate that your weapon might have to be used under, and hold up to, the worst of conditions, pick one that's designed for and proven in military service.

While the Ruger is a nice little carbine ( I have a stainless Mini-30), and while it borrows heavily from a fine military design, it remains a "sporting" rifle. It never went through the torturous and demanding testing regimen required for an combat issue weapon, nor was it designed with hard use under such extreme conditions in mind.

I like my Mini-30 very much, but if the S were to hit the F, my SKS is the one I'd be taking with me while trying to get away from the spray.

IME, the Ruger is a bit more accurate - for the first three or four rounds. Then POI starts to wander badly and it gets worse the hotter the barrel gets.

The SKS might average larger groups, but I know that I can count on them remaining much more consistant no matter how hot or dirty it gets.

FWIW, if magazine capacity is a factor to you I'd personally rather have 10 rds. virtually certain to function perfectly than any number of "maybes". I've never found any aftermarket high-cap for the Ruger that was completely reliable and only a very few that were even close to 100%.

Ruger refuses to make any mags for the Mini-30 other than the standard 5-rd. model, and the relatively few factory 20 rd. mags for the Mini-14 out there are hard to get and expensive.

For the retail cost of a nice Mini of either flavor your friend could get an excellent condition SKS, accessories such as a sight adjustment tool, chest ammo bandoleers, stripper clips and a reasonable supply of mil-spec ammo, even at today's prices.

If he's looking for the most cost-effective solution, that'd be my recommendation.

If it were me, I'd buy an SKS and use the money I saved to buy as much ammo as I could afford.

The Rugers may be prettier and have an overall mmuch better fit & finish, but if he's looking for reliable function over what looks nice in the gun cabinet, SKS wins hands down.

500-600 can get you a used AR, or a nice AK, either of which are good. The SKS is also a good choice, and the prices have been pretty stable on them for a while.

If the money is for everything, I'd lean toward this. That money could buy the SKS, spare parts, and a couple thousand rounds.

Solely for an SHTF situation? I'd go the AK-type critter.

As a hunter and handloader, I'd go with the Mini-14 for day-to-day mixed use. For any likely scenario in my part of the world, I see no particular benefit to an AK--but not many people live in a sparse-population near-wilderness area.

I don't know. The AKs and SKSs never fit me well. The Mini 14 operates like the M1 Carbine and it shoots well enough for me. So I don't get to put the round between the eyes at 80 yards; it hits him in the cheek instead; so what? And I have found several aftermarket hicap mags that work fine in the Mini-14 (don't know about the Mini-30). I've also found a lot that didn't, but they are out there and not too difficult to find.
A lot of Police and Correctional Departments use Minis as their patrol rifle. How s****y are you expecting the fan to get?

Phil, what brand are those magazines that you use in your Mini-14?

I'm going to be getting one soon for use down on the ranch, and I'd really enjoy having more shots for hogs, coyotes, and the range.

The Mini is a handier piece, by far. The SKS is a clunky battle rifle that shoots a relatively weak round for its bulk.

However, the SKS is rugged and cheap. An aftermarket stock, and no bayonet, can make it handier.

Much as I like the way my Mini handles, and as much as I prefer stainless steel in a practical rifle, it's hard to justify the price of the Rugers these days.

The price isn't much of a concern for me, as my discount at my workplace knocks off approximately $97 before tax.

That, is a fair price.

what brand are those magazines that you use in your Mini-14?

They aren't marked. I bought a whole bunch of them used at a gun store. They are stainless and rather heavily constructed. Only one of the bunch did not work properly. My guess would be Triple K. I think I saw similar ones in the Cabelas catalogue.

Okay. I'm wary about aftermarket magazines in Ruger products, because I've had a bunch crap on me in my 10/22, but if anybody knows of a good brand, I'd be much obliged for a nudge in the right direction.

For the price of a Mini 14 or 30 you can buy two SKSs and have two better rifles.

Txstate the pro mags are known for being the best mini 14 mags. I have 4 of them i bought from Academy for $19.00+ tax each.

I have the Mini-14 and 2 sks rifles. Just got the second sks yesterday and haven't shoot it yet. I have a new Mini with the carbine sights but the straight taper barrel. I don't beleive i would have much trouble keeping all my shots on your head at 100 yards.

I like my sks rifles just as well. But my favorite is my Remington 7615 that takes AR-15 mags and doesn't throw my expensive brass all over the place. I reload so thats a big plus for me. Besides that rifle is very accurate. Maybe Krocus will post some of his groups from his 7615.

Either gun is a fine choice. See if your friend can get someone to let him shoot both rifles. That will help him decide faster than anything we can write here.

the only thing to recpmmend the mini-14/30 for me would be the ease of mounting a scope on the "ranch model"

i think i can load a SKS faster than either Ruger...it has a biult-in guide for the stripper clips

It is pretty disappointing to hear how inaccurate the Minis are. They are a great looking and handy sized carbine. For as much as they cost and fact that they are based on such a venerable design, it is a bit surprising to me that they are inaccurate.

ah yes...

my russian SKS was manufactured in 1954...would that mean it was made by left over german POWs? would they have survived that long in a gulag?

I'm no fan of the 5.56 round, it works, I just don't prefer it.

I held an SKS or two and I've owned a couple of Mini 30's.

My choice..... Mini 30. No hi cap mags? Load up a few 5's. Get an aftermarket 10 rounder by ProMag.

Accurate? Yes, mine is. 2" @ 100 yards after a barrel retorque and I had a trigger job - $60 - and it breaks like glass @ 3#.

SKS is bulky and long IMO, the Mini is short and handy, and when the S hits the F, travel light and fast is my thought.

Plus you can hunt deer and pig with it. :)
