What the deal with these 16" Mini-14's I've seen. I know people cut down their Mini-barrels to increase accuracy. Anyone have one of these factory 16 inch factory Mini-14s? Are they some kinda LE overrun or something? Is the accuracy any better than the 18"?

people shorten their mini barrels to make it more stiff, and yes it increases accuracy. i dont think ruger has ever made a mini with a 16" barrel.

I have a 182 series Stainless Steel GB in a folding stock with a 16 inch barrel. She is factory. Nice handly little rifle.

Never seen a factory one, but have seen ones cut down as short as 14" (with a permanently attached muzzle brake).

Accuracy was better than factory.

I suspect a non factory crown helps too...;)

I have shot one of the short mini-14. It appears to have greater accuracy, but that could be because of the better sight system on them. The receiver is marked L.E, and it's unknown if Ruger has them available for public sale. One of the rumors that I heard as to why Ruger makes them for just two inches shorter, is that they fit upright in the newer patrol cars and easier to get out. The rifle is the same design as the 18", but it does feel alot shorter.

Ruger had about 500 of these that were going to go to San Fran PD. SFPD ended up backing out of the deal and going with the Remington 7615 pump .223 that takes AR mags. So, there are about 500 of these out there that have been scattered in to the wind for private sale. Ruger will not sell them to us untrustworthy lowly civilians.

That's the story, give or take. The number of rifles could be off a little, but I heard 500.

Ruger at one time did make a short barrel (less than 16 inch) rifle in select fire(full and semi-auto). It was called AC556 I think that was the model number. It has a pistol grip with side folding stock. It had a modified bird cage style flash/muzzle break.

It was featured in several movie and TV shows. Once was used on the Airwolf TV show and the one of the Police Acadame movies. I

I've seen cut down Rugers at the Factory and it was only a limited run. The front sight was integral with the upper gas port on the factory guns.
