After being dissatisfied with the stock grips (stocks?) on my S&W547, I purchased a Hogue Monogrip on the advice that it was thinner and more comfortable. But I find that I can barely get any finger purchase (about 60% of my index pad) on the trigger using either of these. On a whim, I took the grips off and tried dry-firing with NO grips installed, and....whaddya know! Perfect!

Well, not quite. See, I can't seem to get strong purchase for the heavy trigger without heeling the revolver a lot. Basically, I grip it as high as possible and bend my wrist old-school like when shooting a single action or flintlock. It works ok, even though its not the 111 degree combat grip of autoloader orthodoxy. Some "filler" behind the trigger guard a-la Tyler T-grip would be ok, but really not necessary.

Basically, where can I find some grips that are just shy of being no grip at all? I just want something to cover up the mainspring and prevent the profile of the frame from poking my hand. Ajax grips looked like they had some promising items in their Secret Service grips, but I don't want to spend $70 on some fancy rare wood from extinct rainforest trees than have been brought back to life by reconstructing their DNA, or walrus-penis ivory that's been raised on beer and caviar. I just want a couple pieces of plastic or wood. I thought about shaving down the stock grips, but the metal medallion inserts and threaded insert look like they might be a problem.

Anyone got any ideas?

at the gun shows locally there are vendors who sell knives and kits. I see one that has many pairs of wood, plastic, faux ivory, etc, that people buy and carve out their own knife grip panels. Many of these are large enough to make grips for a 1911; some might be big enough to carve out a set of stocks for a revolver. Worth a look anyway, and you would have quite a variety of grains, colors, etc. Best of all, they are generally $10/ set or so--cheap enough to screw it up once or twice without it becoming financially painful.

One more idea--buy a set of standard, beat up stocks, and do some sanding/carving on them.

I believe Hogue makes their bantam grip for round-but K-frames. I had once put some on a .38 K-frame and they fit and looked fine and are smaller than Uncle Mike's, slightly.

Do a search on Stephen A. Camp and S&W mod 10s and he discusses the hard nylon from Brownells also, they seem great.

Also get a beater pair of S&W magnas and sand to fit. then add a T grip adapter.

Thanks

Ok...the Uncle Mike's and Bantams look workable. I can't seem to find the Uncle Mike's grips very much. And rarely in the K/L frame.

The Bantam lookes like the Monogrip except with less finger-fru in the front and of course, two piece. I'm gonna give at least one of them a shot (haha!) but it looks like I'm going to have to fudge my own solution to get small enough. That duct tape is lookin pretty good....but I don't want it to screw up the bluing.

Probably the most minimal grips are the S&W factory "Service" grips.
These are simple slabs that cover ONLY the sides of the grip frame.

For something a little better, try the Pachmayr "Professional Compac". These are rubber, fill in behind the trigger guard, but have a open back and are about as small as you can get otherwise.

Here's a pair on my rare S&W Model 66 with a 3" barrel:

I'll second the Compac Pro's from Pachmayr. My J frame wears them. If my Model 13 K frame was a round butt, it would too. Can't see them real well in this pic but maybe it will help?

Trouble is, you guys aren't old enough....:neener:

What he needs is a set of grips (stocks) of the kind used during World War Two on the .38 Victory Model.

Go to: www.e-gunparts.com

And look up the following item:

Original square-butt, smooth finish K frame grips Item # 359150
You might also have to buy a matching screw.
You can slim them a bit if you want to, but I doubt that you will.

Square butt!

Do the Compac Professionals not come in square butt? Cuz my 547 is spongebob squarepants here.

Since your 547 is the 4" square butt, I think Old Fuff's idea is dead on. Find a set of service grips for a Victory model. I've got an old set somewhere. I'll see if I can dig 'em out this weekend.

Farris, where did you get that black ramp insert for your front sight from? I hated my red ramp and took it out. What you have is slimmer than my replacement.

By the way, my K frame has Eagle Secret Service grips. I'll see if I can get a picture for you. They are about as small as I'd want to go.

I installed the black insert myself.
It's a piece of a solvent-proof screwdriver handle.

In the face of the insert is an oval-shaped hole filled with gloss white paint.
From the rear, this looks like a white dot.

Apparently, the Pachmayr Professional Compac ONLY fits round butt revolvers.

Victory!

Victory grips it is! maybe with a set of Tyler T's along for the ride.

I wonder if the V-grips are any thinner than the ones I've got here. They kinda look like beat up S&W magnas, but I'm not a grip expert. The ones I have are rather sqaureish and do not bevel near the edges of the fram but are the same thickness throughout...at leas near the bottom. At the top, they are round and small, but that's not a lot of help. In the body, they are wider than the Hogue monogrip.
