hso's right on the mark. Outstanding synopsis!
Me? The 240gr CL-SIL Hornady on top of the stoutest powder charge I can comfortably shoot with a reasonably fast follow-up shot. I carry the Desert Eagle because of the ability to reload fast, and it loves the cartridge I've developed. Works equally well in the Super Redhawk. Neither of us minds the weight of either rig one bit. .
Realistically, though, for you I'd suggest the plain old Brenneke 1oz 12ga slug load in a short shotgun. How that works for you is a whole nother question, and there are lots of cans and cant's on carrying one in the mountains as far as I know (especially for someone out-of-town, AKA a stranger - when one knows most of the FS/SO gang, they don't even blink at Susan or me when we're out & about), so be sure to check the rules.
Obviously, bears are tough, and they cover a lot of ground in a big hurry if one charges you, and they climb trees quite well.
If one wants to make certain a mountain lion or a black bear notices you be sure to bathe in scented soap, have minty breath (munching candy or mints while you trek), have a sweet/citrus sports drink in your canteen and be sure to toss trail mix to the cute squirrels and birds you meet along the way.
Oh - and black bears just love the smell of beer!
