I am relocating from the West (270 Win. Country) to Missouri soon. What would a typical deer hunting rifle/cartridge/scope combo look like in the Show Me state? What binocular would you use there? Thanks…

Um, I've seen people use virtually everything here in Missouri. First, divide MO into North and South. Southern Missouri, your talking about alot of brush, and trees. Use an SKS, or .44 Mag Carbine (although I've seen folks use .243, 7mm-08, and .308).

Northern part of state, you have territory more akin the Kansas. More rolling hills, where it makes sense to stay with what you got.

I have a .308 which I plan on using this upcoming deer season.

More than worrying about the weapon, realize that you will be looking at much shorter shots. Typically no more than 200 yards. Northern chunks of the state, you can look at a 300-400 yard shot, but it's rare.

Also, if your reasonably good, you can normally get away without having to have a scope on your gun.

I've hunted North Missouri for over 40 years with a 270 win. I works for me. Mine is a Rem. 760 w/ leupold VXII 3x9x40. My main binoculars are Tasco 8X40, maybe not the best but good enough. You will no doubt get lots of different answers and most won't be wrong, just different opinions.

I hunt in the northern and southern part of the state.
In the South it is THICK timber and lots of hills. A 100yard shot is pretty rare where I hunt here.
In the North its lots of farmland and plains. Under a 100 yard shot is pretty rare here.
I use a .30-06 for the versatility.
I know guys that deer hunt with everything from .223, .243, .270, .30-06, .308, .300 Win Mag, 7mm mag.

Whatever you use out west will work just fine in any part of Missouri. It is best to be equipped for a long shot, even if it might not occur. I live in the middle of the state and hunt both woodland and more open areas.

Even in the wooded portions of the state, there are often bottomland grain fields, pastures, and power line cuts that can offer very long shots. In other words, a short-range rifle will be a handicap in any part of the state if a long shot presents itself, but your .270 will not be a handicap anywhere in the state. Personally, I use both a .30-06 and a 7mm-08. Both have killed deer at spitting distances and at long range.

You will love the relative simplicity of our game laws (compared to out west) and the abundance of deer. We can kill three bucks (two with a bow and one with a gun), and in most of the state you can kill as many does as you want (at $7 each). I know several folks who regularly take 12 - 15 deer a year, and all get eaten by someone. I am usually satisfied with 4 or 5.

Welcome to the land of freedom, Nor Cal implant:D

I can't tell you exactly what to buy as far as a hunting rifle. However, I can tell you some places to buy one and where you can practice with it. I don't know which part of Missouri you're moving to, but I can tell you some details about the Kansas City area gun resources if you are moving here or participate in firearms activities here.

There's a Cabela's across the state line in KCK. Of course, their selection is good.

Show- Me Shooters is a smaller gun store run by a guy in Claycomo, Missouri. A pretty good place. Where I bought my Saiga. I'd say he does business fairly. He also has a very nice range there for handgun practice.

Another place is Denny's Guns in North Kansas City. It's not as organized as Show- Me or as smoke free (it was reaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllllllllyyyyy bad before they got a HEPA in there... and they hide that in a corner ), but the store does have good connections to local shooting clubs.

The Bullet Hole is a gun store and pistol range in Overland Park, Kansas. It's an okay place. The range gets incredibly cold during this time of year, though, and it isn't as nice as Show- Me's range.

The Missouri Department of Conservation operates two ranges in Kansas City. One of them is the Lake City Range (same name as the ammunition plant in Independence). It is a full service place, with a shotgun and rifle range. I haven't been there, personally, but if it's anything like the next range on the list, it should be very nice.

The range I usually go to with my dad is Parma Woods in Parkville, Missouri. It only has a rifle range, but it is very modern and sheltered. The only parts I don't like about it are that it is supervised and that bi-metallic bullets aren't allowed there.

Welcome to Missouri.

Your 270 will serve you well in any part of MO. I live in the Ozark region and use .44mag, 30-06, 308 and 45-70s. Those are just the ones I have killed deer with. I have numerous others that haven't been blooded yet. Most shots in my region are 100 yards or less but can be 200 or 300 yarders in some of the cleared areas. This year I shot three with the 45/70 at about 60 yard average. Last year I got two at about 140 yards with the .308. If you like your gun and am comfortable with it I would go ahead and use it.

I took my first deer just north east of KC. Used a TC 10" hunter in 35 Rem. from a tree (not a stand) 75 yards and a 6 point buck later, sweet!!

Your .270 is a great Missouri deer hunting cartridge. You can get some long shots if your gonna be hunting around soybean fields up north or cornfield throughout the state. I hunt the timber on mark twain natl forest so I have killed deer with 30-30s, .308, .35 remington 45-70 and .41 mag pistol.

Like others have stated your .270 will make a good rifle for anywhere in the state. Here in the southwest part most shots are taken within a 100yards. That does not mean you could not shoot one out farther, it just means that deer are so plentiful that most shots are within that range.

From my back deck, up on a hill, I could make shots from anywhere up to a mile, but why when I have deer regularly come within 50 ft of my house. Just down the hill from me you would be lucky to get a clear shot over 50ft.

What part of Mo are you moving too??? (better to recomend shops and ranges)

What part of Mo will you be hunting in? (better to advice on terrain and shot distances)

I live in St. Louis, but have a lot of family in Southern Mo... The (deer) hunting down there doesn't seem as productive as the hunting up north...

Most hunters I know down here in the SW use .30-06 or 30-30. Of course as mentioned above there is a wide variance in preference, so use what you like. Short distances are common here for deer as the brush is thick. I know quite a few handgun and bow hunters too.

Welcome to Missouri! I love my state, and we have some beautiful country for you to explore!

Guys,

Not to hijack the thread here.... but just wanted to take the opportunity to let any Missouri milsurp shooters-collectors out there know about the Osage Orange Sharpshooters. The OOS is a very active CMP affiliate club in the Springfield area, going strong since '99. We have a full plate of events and matches coming up this year...... John C. Garand matches, Carbine matches, rimfire matches, '03 Springfield and vintage bolt rifle matches....etc....

Beginning in March we have our Annual Rifle Positions Clinic, immediately followed the next day and the next weekend by two Beginners Matches for first time shooters. Don't miss these if you've been wanting to learn how to become a real rifleman.

The OOS has a website at www.swampworks.com. The website is a bit dated and we are working on a new one.... the schedules shown are still last years at this time, but the monthly newsletters are still being posted and are current so check them out for the most updated event listing.

If interested, drop me a line and I can put you on the OOS's e-mail notification list of upcoming events. I'm at <[email protected]>

Thanks for your indulgence.... Back to the main subject of this thread. ;)

Best regards,
Swampy

Springfield has the very expensive, but fun, toy store known as Bass Pro. About 45 mins south is Busick state park, it has a small range that's open year round, all times of day. Other than that, I'm not 100% sure on SWMO, because I just recently purchaced a rifle, then had to return to Germany.

Any public shooting ranges between St. Louis and Springfield that anyone wants to recommend??

As for what rifle to use, your options are almost unlimited. People I know use .308, .30-06, and 270 Remington 700's or Savage 110's If you want to be SURE to take a deer, just drive around on the state highways at sunset and a little after. In some parts of the state, you'd probably be able to take a deer with a well designed noose. A friend of mine (who is a bit crazy, btw) jokingly says he wants to kill one Rambo style by jumping out of a tree at one and stabbing it.

Another gun shop if you are moving to KC metro area is Great Guns in Kearney.
I have yet to find a gun shop that comes close to them price wise on any gun. I have seen them be $100-150 cheaper on a couple of my guns that where over the 1k price mark.
A place you can shoot your rifle is Parma Ridge in Parkville, MO. Its a Conservation run shooting range.
For pistols I usually go there or SHow0Me shooters
