Don't Let President off Hook to Save AWB
http://enews.millionmommarch.org/plugin.jtml?siteID=MMM&p=1&Tab=News&Object_ID=574776

Now more than ever, it is important to keep the pressure on President Bush to save the Assault Weapons Ban. It is not too late for him to act, and though election laws prohibited us from tying this issue to his candidacy, if we stick to our lobbying message, we remain legal, while still making our point.

And our point is that President Bush can still save the federal Assault Weapons Ban!

Here are three things you can do to keep the pressure on President Bush:

1. Respond to Bush's Comments with Letters to the Editor
Newspapers print letters in response to the news. So every time your paper covers President Bush speaking about the country's safety or on the war on terror, you've got a hook for sending in a letter to the editor about the Assault Weapons Ban.

And since he says something like that almost everyday, you can send a letter (and vent your anger) on a regular basis.

Below are three sample letters that you can send in under your name or use as inspiration for your own letter. Encourage your chapter members to do the same.

2. Distribute AWB Lobbying Message
We need to tell people that President Bush let the AWB expire, especially people that recent polling shows care about this issue. Specifically, we need to reach the "Security Moms," a group of women who consider themselves Republican or Independent and rate safety/security of family as an important value.

MMM staff has developed state-specific flyers which we will either send to you or print for you, depending on your location. We are also working with other organizations, and encourage you to do the same, to determine additional distribution avenues. Be thinking of events where you would find a large turnout of "Security Moms" in your community, reach out to state gun violence prevention groups, and contact your MMM Regional Director for more information about how to get copies of your state's flyer. (Email your RD at www.millionmommarch.org/chapters.)

3. Lobby the President Directly
You are always welcome to call the White House (202-456-1111) to express your views on the President's role in letting the Ban expire. Or if you're near the campaign trail, you may have an opportunity to organize a protest around the President's visit to your state.

But, you don't need President Bush to come to your town to express your disappointment about his decision to let the Ban expire. In every city, there is a Bush office that is an acceptable location for getting out your message.

Be creative and think of something that would attract attention. One idea: bring a bag of soccer balls and tell the press that soccer moms want to give some politicians a swift kick.

But whatever you decide to do, keep up the pressure and make sure everyone in your state knows that President Bush let the Assault Weapons Ban expire.

The Message
President Bush allowed the federal Assault Weapons Ban to expire on September 13 despite overwhelming police and public support. But the fight is NOT over, tell President Bush to save the federal Assault Weapons Ban.

Consider this:
During his campaign in 2000, President Bush pledged to renew the assault weapons law that prohibits the manufacture, sale and importation of certain military-style, semi-automatic assault weapons and ammunition magazines that hold more than ten rounds. But so far he has done nothing to prevent military style weapons like AK-47s and UZIs from flooding back into our neighborhoods.
In a letter, former Presidents Ford, Carter, and Clinton have urged President Bush to save the law.
National law enforcement organizations, and ten of thousands of police chiefs, sheriffs, and rank and file law enforcement officer's support renewing the Ban.
Polls show two-thirds to three-quarters of Americans support renewal for the Assault Weapons Ban including a majority of gun owners.
According to U.S. government data, since the Ban was passed in 1994, the incidence of assault weapon use in crime has dropped by 66 percent.
Since the Assault Weapons Ban expired on September 13, brand new assault weapons are now available to terrorists, without background checks at gun shows in most parts of our state. In fact, a terrorist training manual actually encourages terrorists to get their assault weapons in the United States.

Sample Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,
If President Bush is so concerned about preventing terrorist attacks in the United States, why did he let the assault weapons ban expire September 13th? A terrorist manual specifically encourages terrorists to purchase assault weapons in the U. S. President Bush has now made it easier for them to get brand new AK-47s and ammunition magazines that can fire 20, 50, and even 100 bullets. Explain to me how that protects public safety?
Sincerely,
Jane Smith

Dear Editor,
If President Bush is so concerned about preventing terrorist attacks in the United States, why did he turn his back on law enforcement's request that he renew the assault weapons ban? Law enforcement wants weapons of war and high capacity magazines off the streets. I have lost faith in President Bush's ability to fight the war on terror. Law enforcement in this country has told him what they need to help keep us safe, and he is ignoring them.
Sincerely,
John Jones

Dear Editor,
Once again, President Bush talked today about his "solemn duty" to keep America safe. If he truly believed this, why did he let the assault weapons ban expire September 13th? President Bush has now made it easier for criminals, terrorist, and gang members to get brand new AK-47s and ammunition magazines that can fire 20, 50, and even 100 bullets. Explain to me how that keeps America safer?
Sincerely,
Joan Johnson

Yeah I was hoping to get a couple of new, free from the ice cream man machineguns to replace my 20 year old malfunctioning antique.

If the flood of guns came this area must have excellent drainage because I didn't manage to snare a single one.

Now more than ever, it is important to keep the pressure on President Bush to save the Assault Weapons Ban.
I cannot believe these people still don't grasp even the simple nuances of government.

The AWB was legislation that was slated to expire after a 10 year period unless enough legislators voted to renew it. They didn't have enough of a vote to renew it so it EXPIRED. It is as though it never even existed.

Knowing all that, exactly how do they think the POTUS will be capable of 'saving' the AWB? I want to know, seriously.
