National AWB Leafleting Days: October 16 and 17

President Bush let the Assault Weapons Ban temporarily expire on September 13. Bush pledged to renew the Ban, but did not lift a finger to lobby for it, despite requests by every major law enforcement organization. Bush even refused to meet with national law enforcement leaders.
As a movement, we must continue to lobby Bush to reinstate the federal Assault Weapons Ban as soon as possible. Lives are at stake. Election rules prohibit us from engaging in electioneering, but we can continue to lobby him to reinstate the law.
There are two groups who would be influential in lobbying President Bush to reinstate the Assault Weapons Ban: the subsets of suburban Republican and Independent women who are concerned about terrorism and public safety. From our polling, we know that these women will be more likely to take action to lobby President Bush on this issue. They understand that military guns and high capacity magazines are weapons of war that could be used against our kids, by terrorists, criminals, or the mentally ill.
The Million Mom March, working with States United, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, and the Consumer Federation of America, among others, has developed lobbying and educational flyers on the assault weapons issue. We want to get these flyers into the hands of our target groups, as soon as possible.
We are encouraging activists across the country to organize literature drops Saturday, October 16 and Sunday, October 17, the weekend following the one month anniversary of the law's expiration. Million Mom March chapters and state gun violence prevention groups are encouraged to work together to coordinate literature drops and pull in coalition partners who may also be interested in the project. To determine where to drop flyers, we suggest contacting your America Votes state director or other groups such as the League of Women Voters.
A "Lit Drop" is not the same as doorbelling or canvassing. In fact, we recommend NOT knocking on doors. If you decide to go door-to-door, materials can be left on porches -- or you can choose to not to canvass and decide to distribute the literature at a table at a community event, or hand out flyers at soccer games. (For a little background reference, feel free to consult "How to Do a Literature Drop." Thanks to the Coalition for their work on this piece.)
For this project, we have developed state-specific flyers for every state to use. We can add a logo, email address, and other contact information and provide you the flyer as a .pdf document. To obtain the master flyer for your state, contact your MMM Regional Director.
It is also particularly important to distribute these flyers in states that are traditionally swing states on the assault weapon issue. These states are: AZ, CO, FL, IA, ME, MI, MN, MO, NH, NM, OR, OH, PA, and WI.
For these important swing states, MMM has a few small grants available to help pay for copying the flyers. If you live in (or close to) one of the states listed, please contact your Regional Director about getting your state flyer copied and distributed.
