EVENT DETAILS

MOTHER'S DAY EVENTS
Steps of the U.S. Capitol, Sunday, May 9

Join us on the west front of the U.S. Capitol on Mother's Day to bring our Halt the Assault message to the front door of Congress. This day will be an opportunity to tell Congress to Halt the Assault on our safety, our families, and our gun laws.

The day will start at 10:00am with an Interfaith Service where all faiths will be welcome. Among the various forms of prayer, the Service will contain an Islamic call to prayer, readings from various traditions, music and hymns, and prayers of remembrance for those who have died from gun violence.

Throughout the day we will listen to speakers share their stories of how violence has impacted their lives and how the gun lobby has assaulted their lives and families.

Informational booths and other visual elements will be peppered throughout the area.

Let's join each other on Mother's Day for an opportunity to remember and recognize those affected by gun violence, and to let Congress know we are here and we must Halt the Assault!

THE NRA BLACKLIST BALL
Grand Hyatt Hotel, Saturday, May 8, 8:30pm

On the eve of the Mother's Day March to Halt the Assault, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March is hosting the NRA Blacklist Ball, a fundraising event to recognize and celebrate the individuals and organizations who have been "blacklisted" by the NRA for their stance on helping to create an America free from gun violence.

The NRA is up to their usual extremist antics, supplying members with a list of celebrities, organizations, and national figures who support sane gun laws. We've highlighted the NRA's extremism and paranoia with the website www.NRAblacklist.com.

And now we are going to have some fun with it!

Join us at the Blacklist Ball for dessert, dancing, a silent auction, and great entertainment, with emceeing by comedian Richard Belzer (from TV's "Law and Order: SVU" and "Homicide").

Individual tickets are $150 before March 12 and $200 afterwards. There are also sponsorship packages, which include tickets, ranging from $1,000 to $75,000.

Who knew that being on a Blacklist could be such a Ball? To buy tickets for the Ball, call Amy at (202) 338-6100, extension 122. Check back here for a link to purchase tickets online.

To donate items to the Silent Auction, contact Lillian Pubillones Nolan (301) 299-6723 or [email protected].

THE COAST-TO-COAST HALT THE ASSAULT TOUR
20 stops in 20 cities, April 1-May 9

Leading up to the Mother's Day March to Halt the Assault weekend in D.C., we will be crossing the country to highlight the looming sunset of the assault weapons ban and Congress' failure to move forward on reauthorization and strengthening of the law.

Through this Coast-to-Coast Halt the Assault Tour, we will take our gun violence prevention message to the grassroots in specific, targeted communities throughout the nation. The tour will educate these communities on the importance of:

* renewing and strengthening the federal assault weapons ban. The federal assault weapon law will sunset in September if Congress' fails to move forward on reauthorization and strengthening of the law.

* defeating the NRA's attempt give the bad dealers and manufacturers blanket legal immunity and deprive gun violence victims of their legal rights.

* taking our message to the halls of Congress in Washington DC the weekend of Mother's Day 2004.

The plan calls for events in approximately 20 communities, beginning in early April. At each stop, local activists will join national Brady/MMM leaders in media events. Local activists will work to garner the participation of local, high profile supporters, law enforcement officials and opinion leaders, and to place op-eds and letters to the editor to support the local event.

We will ensure that each event location in each city has significance to our overall message and call to action.

We will design the events with maximum input from the grassroots leaders on the ground, including the input and presence of law enforcement as well as victims and survivors.

For those communities in states that are not legislative targets, our Tour committee will be working on ways for Million Mom Marchers and other activists to hold their own local events as part of the Halt the Assault Tour.

LOBBY DAY ON CAPITOL HILL
Monday, May 10

On Monday, May 10, we will take the Halt the Assault message to Capitol Hill. Please plan to stay in DC just one more day to help take our message to your elected officials in the United States Congress.

The Million Mom March united with the Brady Campaign Lobby Day will begin with a press conference with Senate and House members, families of assault weapon victims, moms, dads, friends and families, calling for the House and the Senate to follow the President's lead and send him the Assault Weapons Ban Bill for his signature!

Between now and May 1, we want each chapter to gather signatures in support of the Assault Weapons Ban. To this end, we have developed pink AWB postcards that on Lobby Day we can take to members of Congress individually or by the sack full. To get you started, we have printed 200 cards for each chapter: to get your set, email [email protected] your mailing information.

We encourage you to download, print, and reproduce your own AWB cards from the Promote It! section. All cards should be collected locally and either brought with you to DC, or sent by May 1 to our DC office: MMM/Brady Campaign Lobby Day, 1225 Eye Street NW, Suite 1100, Washington, DC 20005.

Cards will also be collected from participants at the NRA Blacklist Ball and the Mother's Day events. Can you imagine the sight of thousands of pink postcards being delivered to Senate and House offices demanding that they Halt the Assault?!

After the press conference, we will divide into groups and meet with select members to thank them for their on our behalf; other groups will meet with members to urge them to do the right thing and sign onto the House or the Senate bill (whichever applies). Additionally, there will be groups going office to office leaving our pink calling cards with the message to Halt the Assault!

We will begin the day with a briefing where we will provide you with a one-page sheet of talking points. Plan to participate. The more we have - the louder the voice.

Lillian Pubillones-Nolan, Potomac, Maryland, mother of 12-year-old son:

“My son is volunteering on Sunday. When the Columbine shootings happened he was afraid but he accepted it as part of life. But now, partly because of my enthusiasm for the Million Mom March, he is giving speeches at school to get other kids involved and I am delighted.

Now that I have a son and a daughter, I see that it is harder for boys, and males in general, to deal with anger in a peaceful way. There might be some genetic reason as to why their short-term way of dealing with anger is violence. The issue is how do we provide a framework for dealing with anger in a constructive way. I think this is related in part to the lack of role models for males, partly because of the disintegration of the family.

I am your typical mom. [with a mansion in Potomac MD] When the Columbine murders happened, my daughter was only three months old. And then there was the day care shooting in California. It could have been one of my own. And I don’t want it to be one of my own.

I am a Hispanic woman and there is a lot of gun violence in my community. But there is also a hesitation among us to get involved in the political process, partly because many of us couldn’t do that back home. People don’t want to make a big deal about the violence that has affected them.

She says:

"I am a Hispanic woman and there is a lot of gun violence in my community."

What an outrageous lie. Potomac, MD is very upscale neigborhood in wealthy Montgomery County, MD. The County does not have much crime (according to States Attorney Gansler) in the first place, and I am sure Potomac has even less, especially gun related crime.

Am I the only person who found it funny that Richard Belzer, author of UFOs, JFK, and Elvis: Conspiracies You Don't Have to Be Crazy to Believe, is going to lecture the NRA on extremism and paranoia?

You know they are looking for donations for the "Silent Auction". Would a pre-ban AR-15 be appropriate?

I can see it now: "Honey, Do you think that the AR15 clashes with this suit/dress?"

My prediction (Karnak the Magnificent Turban on)

There will be pitiful few people at their so called "Blacklist Ball" and even fewer showing up to protest on the mall. (Remember the "big" birthday party for Sarah?) Her last couple of fund raisers have been unmitigated disasters and in an election year purses are already tight.

They will then, with a dead straight face, claim that there are tens of thousands of members of the MMM at Meet Ups across the country that the news media can't see, but trust Sarah, they are really out there working in their own communitiies to stop gun violence at the grass roots level.

The media people, "lazy pieces 'o crap" that they tend to be, will dutifully report that "thousands of mothers were involved", even though their camera can only film a tight shot of 20 to 30 people.

Tom Diaz is probably already editing their phony baloney press release claiming victory and broad support as we sit here.

Wow, with all of 2,500 members, I hope that CNN gives priority coverage to this event! I will be watching with great anticipation! NOT

Maybe all 2500 moms who care about gun violence will show up.

And a week later, after all the media reports, it will be common knowledge that "750,000" showed up. They'll inflate the numbers just like last time.

Wow, with all of 2,500 members, I hope that CNN gives priority coverage to this event!

I guarantee that they will. And they will film with nice low and narrow camera angles too so that it looks like a much bigger croud. All in the interest of being "impartial".

kinda lame to use your home phone number for such an appeal

why someone might send donations for the auction to your house

anyone have any moldy pelts or maybe a moth eaten jackalope?

There's some competition...

PRESS RELEASE

WOMEN’S GROUPS SQUARE OFF ON MOTHER’S DAY OVER GUN RIGHTS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Lakeway, Texas (February 23, 2004) – The Second Amendment Sisters (SAS) will be standing up for the right of women to defend themselves on Sunday, May 9, 2004, in Washington, D.C. The people’s God-given right to keep and bear arms, as articulated in the Second Amendment to the Constitution, is being assaulted on a daily basis by well-funded gun grabbing organizations.

As announced in December, the SAS event is called Second Amendment Freedoms for Everyone Rally (S.A.F.E.R.). It should come as no surprise that the so-called “Million†Mom March organization (MMM) has now announced plans to hold a rally in Washington, D.C., at the same time. The S.A.F.E.R. event is being held at Freedom Plaza, which is on East Pennsylvania Avenue, between 13th and 14th Streets.

Second Amendment Sisters is a true grassroots organization, made up of volunteers who are working tirelessly to preserve the right of law-abiding citizens to defend themselves.

The so-called MMM event, funded in part by Essence magazine, is hiding their gun ban agenda under the guise of “Child Safety.†The MMMs state that “almost 14,000†American children have died from gun violence since the first time the two groups squared off in 2000. Their statistics are padded by using the term “children†to include people as old as 21 years, many of whom died while involved in criminal activity.

90% of all violent crime takes place without the presence of a gun. Further, armed citizens prevent over 2 million crimes per year. The Second Amendment Sisters will once again stand for the right of millions of law abiding Americans to protect themselves.

Further details about the S.A.F.E.R. event can be found on the Second Amendment Sisters website at www.2asisters.org

We must begin to form a counter protest. We have to be able to outnumber these jerks. I say we organize, and meet them in the field wherever they show their ugly heads. Hound them, get in their face, don't let them do anything. Counter protest their BS with RELENTLESS vigor, drive them back.
