(MN) Gun owner tests megamall policy

Why does he feel that way?

For one thing, because the war chest is not full enough yet. For another, he suggested waiting until after the State Fair, which the antis have all predicted will lead to massacres on the midway if permit holders are allowed to carry there.

By the way, going back to the Mall of America thing. At least one store has actually read and understood (some of) the MPPA (MN Personal Protection Act). Banana Republic had signs with the correct language posted at two of their three entrances. The law actually requires that all entrances be posted, but they were close!

Peace,

We've got a similar type of thing going on here in Colorado Springs. There's a guy who openly carries a double-barreled shotgun while on the street, and apparently attends City Council meetings with it. (Though he does have to disassemble it before taking it into the chambers.) This is, at least currently, legal; though the recent shooting in NYC has the Council kinda jittery and thinking about cracking down on open carry, at least in government buildings.

While I certainly don't have a problem with him openly carrying a shotgun anywhere he pleases, I do have to step back and look at the situation through the eyes of a non-gunowner. Unfortunately he isn't a very articulate speaker, and comes across as something of a kook.

So while he may be completely within his legal and civil rights to do so, I think that his choosing to do so without a well-thought out plan on how to avoid looking like a freaky-deaky kook is a very bad thing.

Drawing attention to yourself can be good, especially if it's to bring to light some injustice or one's civil rights. But you had better know how to walk that line to get the majority of people to agree with you.

As an aside, Ortega called the KRDO reporter who did the story and thanked him for being even handed on the issue.

You sure are polite considering my strong language in previous posts. My apologies. It stops now.

Also, can't the Mall Commons be considered its own business entitiy and therfore

As the law is written, the Mall can post anywhere they want, as long as it does not "restrict the lawful carry or possession of firearms by tenants or their guests." So they can post the Food Court, as long as it does not restrict my ability to carry, so really, they can't. They can post the areas that are off limits to the general public AND any of their tenants who might be carrying (i.e. private office space), but they can't (for instance) post the basement service corridors, because their tenants have to bring their trash through there.

Also there has been at least one gang rape down there, so I shudder to think of their liability if that should happen to a permit holder who left their firearm in the car because the mall had it "posted."

And if any permit holder does get mugged and badly injured at the mall, they will be unable to use the "we really didn't mean to ban weapons" claim, because their head of security has told me that they do mean it.

Peace,

Bruce
