On a recent trip to a gun shop they had a number of used S&W model 10's. Naturally, i figured these were some form of trade-in, which the clerk more or less confirmed. So my question is: is $245 a fair price. It seems decent to me as long as i got one of the better ones (there were about 8). On a side note, I've only owned semi-autos before and this would only be for range use as i don't intend on it replacing my Sig as my primary go to gun.

$245 sound very fair for a model 10 in good condition. There have been a lot of trade ins from security companies lately, many of them DAO.
DA/SA is the way to go.

Good Deal

Now all you need are some 158 gr, LRN,which should shoot dead on point of aim. Watch out model 10's are very addictive !:what:

A SA/DA Victory model 10 from the '40s is the gun I've been plinking spent 12/410 ga shotgun shells with since I was a teen. The gun screams "point of aim"

The same pistol took my wife and turned her from an extreme gun phobic, into Annie Oakley. It only took 10 years to get her to hold it.

Sadly the pistol has been mostly retired, the gap has widened just too much at the front of the cylinder, and bits of debris have cut people standing to the sides of the gun as it's fired.

If it's in good shape, tight lockup, hasn't been Dremeled into worthlessness... I'd say it's worth the $250 just for the joy it'll bring you as a pleasant gun to own.

I can speak personally to their longevity with good care.

If the revolver is in good condition that price is more than fair. You might not want to wait too long because at that price they probably won't last too long.

I view the modern-day bottom-dollar of a clean, without serious flaw, 4" m&P or Model 10 as $300. If they are offering clean ones in 4" with nice bluing for that price, jump on it.

I have a special love for Model 10s that goes back to the early 60s when I got my first handgun...an old "Victory Model, bought used in a hardware store for about 15 bucks...from my father as a Christmas gift. They've held a place in my heart and in my gun safe ever since.

In fact, there's one on duty in my nightstand right now...and it's loaded with standard velocity 158-grain lead SWC ammo.

I haven't seen a nice M10 that low of price in over two years. M10's with a lot of holster wear and good function are $325+ around here, a nice one well start at $399. These are gun shop prices, you can do better with a FTF deal.

I'm in Northern Virginia also...Would you mind telling me which gun store you visited?

Thank you! :)

It won't replace your semi-auto as your go to carry gun? You say that now, but after owning and shooting one you may change your mind. Just saying...And that is a good price.

I have three. One 2" and two 4". two in the night stands (the 2" is my wife's) and one in the safe. I occasionally carry a mod 19 and once in a while one of the mod 10's...

Model 10 is a great gun, you will not regret buying one. $245 is a bargain for one that is in 90%+ condition. The vast majority of ones I see are between $300-375.

The Model 10 IS the first .38Spl revolver that comes to mind. Pick up some 158-gr lead loads, and blaze away...bullet impact should be VERY close to point-of-aim.

When I hear the term "Police Service Revolver", the 4" skinny-barrel Mdl 10 is what pops up first

+1
Make sure it hasn't been modified to work in DA only.
If it has, you don't want it.

Half the fun of a S&W is being able to thumb cock it for very accurate SA fire.

Oh yea, shades of Eliot Ness and John Dillenger, everyone needs a 1911 45 and a model 10 in the collection. The model 10 is just one of the home run guns, a natural pointer, a piece of history. Side arm of ww2 pilots, tankers, cops n crooks. For $250-$300 heck yea. Just be sure to check out the internals for wear. A little light pitting in the bore is to be expected and usually isnt a problem. Enjoy.

You mean there is still hope? I actually got my wife to hold my M 15. I bought a nickle M 10 with the hope I could get her to adopt it as her own. No luck yet.

As to the OP...RUN back to that shop and grab the best M 10 they have at that price. Pick up two if you can afford it.

i just got a shipment of 10s and 64s today- the 10s are going for about 299 and the 64s about 340- depending on grade...

i say snag it, they are just getting more and more expensive... especially since a new one runs 800

There are VERY few reasons to live in NY...but one of them is cheap revolvers. I just ran across several Model 15's at my local gun shop last month for priced at $225.

W.E.G.,thats not the one you got right? The cylinder is about a 1/4" too low to match the barrel and the flash marks must be a camera issue, rigut? I wouldn't take the one pictured for a fishing anchor! Joke, right?
