An old Model 12 is for sale locally for way less than the $6-800 I usually see them for. Problem is, its missing the bolt and trigger assemblies, magazine tube cap, front sight bead, and buttplate. Some rust, decent but not pristine wood. What would you expect to pay for such a project, and are the replacement parts even available for less than one's firstborn child?

Replacement parts are available, but they are not cheap, nor is the Winchester model 12 an easy gun to work on properly. I would be willing to pay around $200 for such a gun, which is less then the seller could get if he continued to part it out. My willingness to pay is directly related to the work involved in getting it up and running, and not wanting to end up putting more into the gun than a complete one in similiar exterior condition would be worth. That being said there is always the fact that if you purchase such a gun you can work on it over time, spreading out the cost, and you can decide to modify it to your liking. By the way after the Ithaca 37, the Winchester model 12 is my favorite shotgun.

Model 12 Parts gun

Yes M12 parts are available, but they aren't cheap and rarely are they " drop in" and often require fitting. In my part of the country a standard M12 in 12 or 16 start at about $300 and go from there. I would proceed with some caution and buy this gun cheap, like less that $100.00.

If you want a shooter I would check the net and see what's out their. Even with FFL transfer fees you might be happier.

Just my thoughts.

This can be a can of worms, OR an opportunity. If I could pick up something like this for a song, I'd send it to Simmons or Nu Line for a makeover. That would be an investment but well worth it.

I don't think there is any way possible to do this without spending way more then a good working Model 12 is worth.

Just a quick look at Numric parts list shows a bolt is $154, a carrier is $60, a stripped guard is $112, and all the guts that go in it is probably going to add up to another $300 or so.

And that is assuming the receiver on the gun you are looking at doesn't have the bolt locking notch beat out to the point of being unusuable.
That happens to high milage Model 12's. BTDT & got the T-shirt!
That may be why it was stripped for those critical parts in the first place.

All told, you would have a rusty parts gun that may or may not work, with $825+ wrapped up in it.
And that still needs a $200+ re-blue job + stock re-finishing!

The only possible way to come out ahead on that gun is buy it for $200, then strip the remaining parts, and sell them all except the receiver on eBay.
If they will let you.

Well thats kinda what I figured. Likely cheaper to just buy a working one than try to make a working one from a parts gun. Thanks once again for free advice!

I saw nice mod 12's at a local gun show and local gun shop for $400-$500. Nice wood and vent ribs too.

Thats what they want for rusty Wingmasters at the gun shows around here.:cuss: If its a model 12 it must be worth $1000 no matter the condition.

The Model 12 market is pretty soft lately IMO. I have seen some decent examples sell for less than $300 on the auction sites. 16 gauges in particular don't seem to bring much demand, neither do the common full choked, plain barrel 12 gauges.

It could be something worth doing, we have some used parts that work fine and our rib man has some parts also he sells to customers that need them.you can call and talk to john tippen about the parts if you want to.There are some key areas that need to be checked out before spending money on something like this, receiver wear at the locking surface(if it's rolled pass on it),if your in the area come in and i will look at it. if you want to have the work done on it we check the gun out before doing anything. the shop number is 913-782-3131,if the weather is good john will try to play golf so get him in the AM, we open at 9:30 kansas time.

My conscience is bothering me, and I guess I should eat my plate of crow where you can all see me.
The mod 12 that I saw at the gun show and at my local gun shop (same gun) was priced @ $745.00 not $475.00 like I posted earlier.

Crow isn't too bad if you get all the feathers off.
