I have a 60s vintage Model 12. It is wearing a Jostam Mfg Hy-Gun Recoil Pad.

Is this original?

My stock is loose and I can't get the darn thing off to tighten it. If it isn't original I may just cut it off and replace it with a Pachmayr.

I don't believe it's original. I have two model 12's a 16ga made in 54 and a 12ga made in 62 and they have a plastic buttplate. The "Heavy Duck" model 12 had a solid rubber pad with the Winchester logo embossed in it. Unless it's a special trap or skeet model, I would bet that it's an aftermarket add on. The main issue is "Don't" shoot it with a loose stock. Thats a good way to crack it beyond repair. :)

I'm no Model 12 expert, but I never heard or saw a Jostam being a factory accessory on any major make. Lots of them were added by owners after purchase.

My impulse is to tell you to cut away....

Grind away the old pad with a Dremel (use a sanding drum) to get to the screws. Twist the screws out with a pair of Vice-Grips. Old pad is removed without cutting the stock. Do not shoot with a loose stock; it WILL crack!
