Hello everyone. I was wondering which one is better. 686 or GP100?:evil:Just kidding!!!!;) My real question is, is there anyone here who can tell me the changes made to the Model 29 Smith and Wesson? I want to know the design differences from the 29-1 to the 29-9.

From the 29 to 29-1 - deletion of the screw at the upper top of the sideplate.
From 29-1 to 29-2 - deletion of the screw in front of the trigger guard, and reversing of the screw threads on the ejector rod so it didn't unscrew itself under recoil.

These are good, sound, engineering changes, but we pay more for the older ones because, well, that's just the way we are.

There are also some very minor changes, but these are the main ones.

The 29-1 is actually fairly scarce, as the time frame they were made is only for a couple of years.

I'm no expert, but I think that there was a significant change between 29-3 and 29-4, a durability update of some sort. If I remember right, the last of the 29-3s got part of this update, and are marked 29-3E.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I can confirm this?

That is a helpful article. Unfortunately, it doesn't cover the later models like the 29-7 through 29-9. Those are the hardest to find information about. Anybody else know anything about them?

The book "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" is up to the third edition, and lists all of the changes in the engineering revisions made up to the time the book was published. So it is your best source, but may not include the last revision or two as it was published a couple of years ago.

I just checked my 3rd edition, published in 2006. The 29 series goes up to 29-10, put out in 2006.

It's a wonderful book for anyone who has any interest in S&W's, I can't recommend it highly enough.
