model 29 unfluted cylinder

I looked at a nice S&W model 29. It had a super light trigger and cylinder with no flutes. Kinda like the super Redhawk. Was this a factory option? of was it customized? This this good or?

If I recall correctly a few of the current PC guns have unfluted cylinders. It is most likely factory but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell you for sure.

I've seen lots of 629's with unfluted cylinders, but never heard of a 29 done that way. Didn't Smith drop the 29 several years ago? It could have been a special run that was not in the catalog, or even a custom cylinder added later. I'd like to know how this turns out.

I have a 29 with an unfluted cylinder. They made a couple different models over the years.
What model 29 is it you're asking about?
For example mine is a 29-5 with a 6 inch barrel and adjustable front sight.
Need a little more info.

It was a model 29-2. very shinny either polished SS or nickel plated.

My M29-5 is also a 6" version with the adjustable "silhouette" front sight. I've removed and safely stored my adjustable front sight for a smoother, totally silent draw from the holster in the woods, and have a 1st generation Bushnell Holosight red dot sight mounted on the revolver.

It is my primary deer hunting firearm and I've taken lots of deer with this rig through the years.

I've seen other barrel lengths, and change versions of Model 29s with unfluted barrels, as well as the stainless 629 revolvers. They are much rarer to find than the fluted guns.

Unfluted cylinders are one of those unexplainably cool things, like a bobtail on a 1911, or ring-hammers, for which I hope one day to learn of some reason other than pure aesthetics, but if it's aesthetics alone, Hey, I'll take all those things rather than their alternatives whenever possible.

I'd like an unfluted cylinder for my 625, and the 325 I hope one day to purchase, too

Yes, I'll have to agree, unfluted cylinders are very cool, especially on a blue gun. Can't explain it either. It's another reason I like my Alaskan, though it is stainless.
