Hey folks,

As I gazed with awe and wonder on my dad's new Ruger Redhawk I knew then that I wanted a .44 magnum. Watching the 'Dirty Harry' movies only furthered that want. :D

So now here I sit on the laptop scouring the internet for a reasonably priced model 29. I always hear about guys picking up their 29 for a song.

It seems that most of the Model 29 prices are quite high, imho, past the $750 mark. Are there any -cheaper- Model 29s to be had? I found a few listings for 29s that sold for $450-650.

Just wondering if you guys know anything and wish to pass your wisdom onto a poor college student.

And if y'all have any good info or pictures please post some!

I would check your local papers and gun shops; if your buying online you check out budsgunshop.com - you may find one on here as well...

Barrel Legnth

I don't want anything shorter than a 6 inch and no longer than the 8 1/2 inch.

Might keep an eye out in the classified sections on the various gun forums but you can always find one on gunbroker or auctionarms. The longer the barrel usually the cheaper the price.

The prices you mentioned are NOT high, even if they are above your current limited resources for gun expenditures.

That gives you several options - keep looking for a deal, save up to meet the current market price, or get a cheaper alternative

You don't want a barrel over 6", trust me. If you look around you should be able to find a good S&W 29 or 629 for about $550. I just sold a nice 4" 629-1 for that. Keep looking, they're out there.

Unfortunately prices are not what they were five years ago when you could have your pick of 20-30yr old N-frames for $400. Expect to pay at least $500 or more for a good pre-lock model 29. Most online will be more. I paid $850 for a NIB model 24 six months ago and while was glad to get it. I won't deny that the price tag did sting more than a little but I'd been waiting a long time to find a good one at a halfway decent price. Life is short and you have to decide how long you can wait.

Yeah, I could handle up to about $600-$650 right now. Much more than that will hurt. But, I'll keep my eyes about me to find -the- right gun.

I want one, too. But, I want a 4" barrel. I have a feeling I'll be looking awhile since I tend to just buy at local shops.

gunbroker.com has been invaluable to me over the years living in a fairly small town with scant few gun shops. I've found some very nice classic guns at descent prices I would have never found otherwise.

If you don't mind adding a 6 to the front of the 29 and you qualify for their terms, this is the best deal I found and where I got my 629:

Might want to call them and ask if it is really out of stock. Their website doesn't seem to update in real time.

edit-just noticed the OP asked for used. This still fits near the high end of their price scale, though.

Yep, it's a good price if you can get it. I see lots of stuff that are out of stock with great prices. Also, when you do get
your 6/29, don't get carried away (see photos below). I wouldn't have a 4-incher, and tend towards 6-inch. Have you fired
your dad's Ruger?

you might check backpage.com. its like craigslist except you can buy, sell and trade guns on it, and it seems at least in my area that is primarily what the "sporting goods" section is used for. I found a prelock model 29 on there a month ago for $500, no ffl transfer. it was missing the rear sight though, and the grips are pretty beat up. But lock up and everything else checked out perfectly. Some new grips and a sight and its a great piece.
