The model 29 S&W

rcmodel - It just so happens I have a 1950 Target in .44 Spl. that is about 550 numbers earlier then the serial number (S 147220) of Keith's first .44 Magnum Model 29.

Further, it was shipped from the factory new in 1955.

Makes me wonder if the same guys handprints were on it that built Keith's gun shipped in 1956??

Nice gun, but it's the same unattractive trigger and hammer that bothers me on my SS 629. Near as I can tell, mine is color case-hardened MIM. I am going to research getting a SS set for my gun. I wonder if a set is available blued or somehow blackened to match your gun.

This is the trigger and hammer I want, thanks to the picture of Confederate's gun. SW629_Emblem.jpg

real gun, i think it's safe to say that rcmodel's trigger and hammer are not MIM. i, for one, actually like the look of the color case hardened hammer and trigger on both blued and stainless guns.

I have one of the 1978 629s pinned and recessed in the fancy box, one of 100 and it's killed deer. I also have a Mountain Gun from the first run of 3000in about 1988, when they introduced them, that carries well in a jean pocket.

I edited my post to make it clear that I was referring to my trigger/hammer, not what appears to be a stainless trigger and hammer in the picture from Confederate.

This is a picture of my gun.

WAIT A MINUTE...is not the first issue of the lightweoight barrel M629 44MAg sixguns called the " MOUNTAIN REVOLVER"? I think mine is among the first dozen or so..
The Mountain Guns came later.

real gun, my point was that rcmodel's trigger/hammer is not MIM. imho, that lock on the side of the frame is much more unattractive than the color case hardened trigger and hammer. but hey, to each his own, right?

S&W started putting the MIM hammer & trigger on with the 629-5 in '97. Quick way to tell is to look for the firing pin mounted on the pre MIM hammer. See that little hole at the top of the hammer? That's it. ;) In '97 they went to the MIM parts and a frame mounted firing pin.

MIM trigger & hammer are usually black. Never say never, but pre MIM hammer & trigger should have come from the factory chrome plated.

There are a brazilian variations of the M29/629 so there might be the odd exception.

I'm fairly certain the MIM & pre MIM parts are not interchangable but I'm not an expert.

I hate to speak for someone else but I'm fairly certain RC ain't gonna be sending the hammer and trigger from his 1950 Target off to be blued.

...what appears to be a stainless trigger and hammer in the picture from Confederate.
They're not stainless, they're flash chromed. You really need to educate yourself on this subject, rather than polluting every thread with a picture of a S&W with your complaints about the color case hardened hammers and triggers.

I'd have to dig out my books but weren't the "Mountain Revolvers" all .45's???

CraigC - You really need to educate yourself on this subject,

There you go with your high and mighty ad hominem again. Someone with so many posts should reflect a better sense of community. If we knew everything or knew where to find it, we wouldn't need this forum would we?

Perhaps not a good metaphor, because the lock is not optional and is certainly not very obtrusive. The trigger and hammer can perhaps be fixed. There obviously are different colors available.

it wasn't a metaphor. for me the lock is much more unattractive than the trigger and hammer. there simply isn't anything wrong with them.

also, before you mention that someone else should have a better sense of community, perhaps you should refrain from coming on a forum and talking about how ugly other people's firearms are.

Yea can't beat those N frames, 29, 629, 25, 625....

Can you quote me as having done that? You make more of a scene than I did.

I contacted S&W to get more information about the triggers I see on their guns that are silvery in color, but they are on summer break this week.

The very first 629 Mountain Gun figuration was introduced in 1989. It is a 629-2 version frame and only 3000 were made. I read a write up on them in a Guns and Ammo, I believe. Already owning a 29 and my 629 it made me drool. Back in those days Reeds Sport shop was a small operation in Walker Mn. I think it was 1990 when I stopped in on my way by to window shop and saw it in the case. I could hardly believe they had one and immediately put $25 down on it with a promise to come back on the weekend to pay it off. After the paper was done I asked him if he knew how rare they were and he told me he could get more if he wanted to. I told him to order me another one and I would buy 2. I lived an hour away and when I got home the phone was ringing and it was Reeds wanting to give me my down payment and more money back to let them keep the gun. I told them no and went to the bank and then back up there and picked it up.
Is it worth a fortune? No, as I had it tuned and have shot it a bunch. The demand for them caused S & W to start up making more of them and I'm not sure when they started making them in 45 Colt as the 625 Mountain Gun.

I have a 3" 629 that I purchased new in about 1987. I quickly replaced the wood grips, which savaged my thumb knuckle, with Pachmayrs.

Early-on I spent an inordinate amount of my "range time" shooting old golf balls from ~8yds. The way they suddenly DISAPPEARED amused me (and those with me, one of whom provided the copious quantities of the golf balls). :)

At that time and for years afterwards I could buy a 50rd box of American Eagle .44Mag for ~$11-$13. Oh, the memories.

realgun...

It's interesting how people become accustomed to a trigger and hammer that don't match the gun, even convincing themselves that they prefer something cynical and ugly.

you asked, i responded. i think enough has been said.
