Do all model 36 S&W 38 specials have the serial number engraved on the back of the cylinder? Bought one Saturday at an auction with the SN ABA 2xxx on the bottom of the stock but no SN on the cylinder. My (well, actually, my husband's) old model 36 s&w 38 (SN 6xxx) has the number both on the bottom of the stock and engraved on the back of the cylinder rim. There are only minor differences between the two except for that. This was my first gun purchase and I'm really hoping I didn't goof.
Thanks for a great website.

No, you didn't goof. At one time S&W would individually fit, and then number the following parts to be sure they got put back on the right gun:

Frame
Cylinder
Barrel
Extractor Star (underside)
Sideplate (on inside)
Stocks (on inside)
Yoke (on inside)

But this was labor intensive and became expensive. So over time they stopped doing it. Your older model 36 (or pre-36) was done the old way. The one you recently purchased was much newer so it isn't numbered - or as much so.
