Local pawn shop has a minty 5" Smith and Wesson Model 57 no-dash, .41 Magnum. They are asking $700, as they accept that is a shortened 6". The conversion was very well done, timing is perfect, finish is at least %95, no box or papers though.

I already have a 6" M28, so I don't really NEED another N-frame, and .41 isn't a caliber I particularly want to start stocking, but there is something about this gun that is whispering to me.......

I bought a 4", 57 (no dash) a few months ago I guess it was. I paid more for it than that, but it had a 4" barrel, presentation case, and was about the prettiest S&W Revolver I've ever seen. It had a set of Hogue grips installed, but inside the presentation case was a set of rosewood presentation grips. Alas, the rosewood grips were for a K-frame, not an N. So it was a small problem. I had to find a set of period grips for the 57, but on the other hand I had a nice set of presentation grips for a K. Call it about even. I did find a set of period target stocks.

I don't have any particular interest in the 41 Magnum but I'd have bought the gun if it had been a 44, or a 357. It was just a really nice gun. I got dies, brass and a few Berry's plated bullets, and loaded up a few, just above starting level rounds. I have fired it a few times, but I got no idea how much more I will.

Should you get the one you're talking about? I can't answer that, but around here, most any N-frame will bring a grand, unless it's been buried out back for a time.

All I have to add is that, if the piece is "minty" or even a pretty clean specimen, that'd be a good price in my region. 57s and 58s go from $900 to well north, up to $13-1500 with box, papers and display cases.

Where do you live NIGHTLORD40K? Anywhere near me? If you do live near me, which pawn shop?
I'd like to take a look at that Model 57. I wouldn't try to buy it out from under you, or anything like that. Trust me. Heh! Heh!:D

If it checks out okay as you say it does I would be all over that at $700. Haven't even seen a Model 57 in close to 10 years and that one was LNIB with a 6" barrel and the presentation case and was priced in the upper stratosphere.

At one time I had both a Model 57 and a Model 58. Had to sell the Model 57 during some tight financial times and ended up trading the Model 58 on some other handgun that I don't recall what it was; probably a semi-auto. Would sure like to have either of them back.

If you can easily sell it later for the same price, why not? If you don't like it, you'll get your money back.

Chances are, though, that you'll like it. :)

If you reload...jump all over that!

If not, take breath and think about it, 41mag ammo is hard to find and expensive. ...might end up with something you don't shoot, or will be rough on the wallet if you do.

DON'T do it, Night! PLEASE! You have your whole LIFE ahead of you!

OK, I tried.

Lately, I've been very reluctant to add another caliber to the, what do you even call it? Inventory? Collection? Mish-mosh?

I would buy it

But I can be horribly impulsive when it firearms. Especially a beautiful, revolver in great shape, with a barrel length that is ideal for general purpose woods carry, in one of the best all around revolver calibers at a price that's a fair bit cheaper than where I li..... wait a minute..... Don't buy it. Where you located again??

Ya, the urge is diminishing now that I look at the ammo......even the cheap stuff is about $1 a round. Still, that's not any worse than, say, .30-06.

On the other hand, I was adamant about not getting into .32acp for years too, and now I have four of them and couldn't be happier.

Ugh, first-world problems, right.......

Think I'm gonna go take another look at it Monday. Much like the One Ring though, if I touch it, it will probably bend my will. :D

Really man, if you can, get into handloading. The .41 Mag is a handloaders dream come true. And I'm not even talking about how much money you can save by rolling your own .41 Mag ammo, or for that matter, even 30-06 ammo.:)

What the heck are you doing writing about it? Why is that revolver not in your hand right now? I've been haunting gun shops for years, looking at revolvers, and have never once seen a 57. Go! Go forth and purchase!

Glad I could help.
Yep, you came to the wrong place to get talked out of a 57, shortened or not. I have a 4" no dash 57. It's sweet. :)

Ammo not available at Walmart. The .41 is a useless cartridge offering nothing over .44 Mag through which you can also schoot .44 Special.
Another option is 10mm in semi-auto pistol. Ammo while not available at Walmart can be had for <$20 per box of FMJ. Usually loaded to .40S&W levels but for range ammo that is ok. This should save you several hundred by not purchasing that gun.

Why do you think we would talk you down? We (with the exception of paulsj) are the worst lot of enablers you'll ever know......
This is true. It's like going to the bar and asking the bartender if you should have another beer .....hoping he says no so you feel better as you watch him pour you another nice fresh delicious draft.... lmao.

Strangely enough, my last couple of pistols have been 32 ACPs, and I'm really liking the guns and the caliber.
