Model 60 6" barrel ?

I have handled one with 5" barrel and Uncle Mikes boot grips. The gun was kind of trail gun variation that proved unpopular with consumers so S&W nixed if after relatively short production run. It was not rare enough for my tastes so I passed on it. That is the longest barrel in this model I have held in my hands.

Yes it was ss with what salesman referred to as two piece barrel. They are kind of difficult to find as most were made with 2" or 3" barrels.

A local shop still had a new 5" 60 on display a few weeks back - $599! I bought an ANIB 5" 63 - it's .22 sibling - a couple of years ago from a friend's estate. Kind of ungainly, even with some nice '60 Pro' grips (top, below):



Think of the 3" 63 (bottom above) as a '60 Pro' model - a great handfit, balance and everything. I have a 60 Pro - it's a shooter - I think the 5" 60 would be like the 5" 63 is to my 3" 63 - a safe resident. YMMV.

PS A new 3" 60 Pro isn't much more than the $600 tag on that 5" 60!

As much as I would love to get that 5" 60 I think I will wait for a used one to come along for a better price...I have a SS 2.125" 60...Mike

When they first introduced the 5" version of the .357 Magnum/J-frame I thought it had possibilities because it offered superior Magnum performance that could only be obtained with the longer barrel; combined in a relatively lightweight platform. But then they messed up the concept by offering it with small boot-grip stocks, which in this case served no useful purpose.

The idea wasn't a first. In past times both S&W and Colt both offered small-frame revolvers with 5 and 6-inch barrels, and some of them were very popular.

As an aside: I have a 6" .32 Colt barrel with Pocket Positive markings. Now all I need is a revolver to match it.

Boot-grip Stocks

Old Fluff....You said...." But then they messed up the concept by offering it with small boot-grip stocks"....are these the same stock pictured below?....Well I'm having trouble loading the photo...so before I submit this reply I'll ask are the grips to which you refer the same stock rubber grips which are on on my 2.125" model 60?....Mike

No, but you're close. The model in question was the 60-18, and the stocks were 3-finger grooved/round butt, made from rosewood, and slightly longer and more tapered at the bottom. In my view, considering the revolver's configuration, barrel length and proposed use; they should have gone to a larger, square-but style - and considered eliminating the finger grooves, which are O.K. if they fit a person's hand but not otherwise.

If I happen to get one (the revolver) the stocks will get changed very quickly!

Well old fluff I'm going to have yo disagree with you on the grips.

I have a 60-18 with the uncle mikes style round butt grips. Its easily far and away the most naturally pointing revolver/handgun I've ever owned. For me its like pointing my finger and a bullet goes through what I point at.

The grips are a bit low end looking but I dare not change em for fear of messing up the guns balance.

I ccw mine regularly and its amazing how well it conceals for a 5" 357

A good thing to remember re the 5" 60/63 - they can be pocket carried in most of my britches front pockets. Ammo components have gotten so dear, I can't afford patches for said pockets - that barrel just rides against my leg...

The 60 Pro grips are $43 + s/h from S&W Accessories - I like them - even on my 3" 60 Pro!
